View Thread: *Possible* New Century Tantal Problem?

Sean910
I got a Polish Tantal from J and G a couple months ago and they updated their website assuring people that century got it right finally.. Finally made it out to the range yesterday. I shot it from 25 and 50 yds with Russian 7n6 surplus. It is S/N Y0033**. Here is what happened..

I shot it pretty fast..I dumped 90-120 rounds in like 5-6 minutes. I sent J and G and email and they said that Century assured them that they were good to go and that they would work great with mil surp ammo. Wolf and Bear would still have problems at short ranges. They gave me Century's warranty number and said they would probably like to know that they were having problems and to call them and they would replace it. I was reading Century's flier my dad got the other day and it said they are no longer taking back Tantals and that it was what the ammo was supposed to do (I know its what its supossed to do, AFTER it impacts the target..). What do you think?

P.S. I've been lurking around and finally signed up. I wish I could have made a better first post but Hey!

Your gun is keyholing. Nothing has been "fixed" by Century. Kinda sucks.

Typical Century response.Blame it on the ammo.I was seriously thinking of buying a Tantal 8 months or so ago and decided against it because of reports just like yours.Sorry your having trouble with it,td

PS :smiley_46 TO THE :ak47: FILES :)

FLATWOODS!!!!!
My god I haven't been there in years. I bought a lot of guns there but at 1993 prices.

Sorry about your tantal. I like the century tantal but I just put that one into the catagory of guns you shoot because you like to hear it go boom and smell the gunpowder.

I believe the problem is in the barrel. Eventually someone will make an after market barrel to solve the problem

Save up, hunt hard, and find an Interarms wz.88. It's worth the effort and cost.

Or pick up a kit with the bbl intact before they are all gone and get your build on.

+1 on this or the "buy a kit" response. The Interarms/High Standard Tantals are nice if you can find one in the $600-800 range still.

whats the deal with "century" i heard that the barrels were 556... true? and not 545x39

Sean910
well we called century's warranty line and they said thats what its supposed to do..Which I know the bullet is supposed to keyhole...AFTER IMPACTING FLESH, not after leaving the barrel.

Where are you from dex2111? I've lived in jacksonville my whole life. I wish there was another rifle range around here, flatwoods sucks the big one. Range Nazi Tony ruins all the fun. Once you lay into him though he'll leave you alone. We should meet up and shoot together sometime, I don't have any shooting buddies but my dad and he's busy all the time.

First they blamed the ammo and told everyone to only use Romanian Hot Shot (wtf?). Then Century came up with the "This round was designed to keyhole" nonsense.

Do a bullet check with a 5.56 round and I bet you'll find that it looks just like what you would expect from a 5.45.Always use military 5.45 to test though because my unissued 74 bbls swallow wolf 5.45 MC whole.

Century Sucks!

HUh? You have unissued 74 bbls that swallow Wolf MC 5.45?

The military 7n6 is slightly smaller than Wolf. Sounds like you have oversized bbls as well.

Sean910
I did the "bullet test" with the Russian 7n6 and there was about 1/16th of an inch hanging out or some more. Still keyholed. J and G got a hold of me finally and said they will take it back since Century is being gay..Here is what the email said..

Sir,

Yes, that was the line from Century from the old batch. They assured us they had fixed the issue on the new batch. We have only had the new ones since earlier this spring (serial #'s start with Y on the fixed ones), and they assured us their warranty applied to the new batch, but they do not warranty the old batch. Did you get far enough with them to give them the serial # from your gun?

My SN is Y0033**..So I do have a new rifle. Sorry bastards.

NO "Y" on mine? Serial #034**. Rapid fire 7N6, 50yds.
