View Thread: Romanian 22mm compensator Question

I have a question that someone out there may be able to answer,it concerns the Romanian 22mm comp,i had gotten one from K-VAR when they had them and just recently i got one of the AIMS 74 romanian kits that came in,it also had the original 22mm comp.Upon looking over the kit i noticed that the internal dimension of the comps were different. At the end of the comp were they are hard chromed the one from K-VAR is a much smaller diameter where the bullet passes through than the latest one i got on the 74 kit.The difference is quite noticeable, though i did not micrometer them you can see the difference with the naked eye.The one from the kit looks as though a 7.62 cartridge could go through it,were as the K-VAR unit is much smaller and looks as if only a 5.45 will go through.Does anyone no why the 2 have different diameters.I will try and mike them tommorrow and also try to post a pic,in the meantime any ideas as to why the difference??

I wonder if the K-var one is for 5.56 or maybe K-var ordered them oversized in case somebody tried them on a 7.62. I remember the Bulgarian, East German and Russian ones were ruled as flash hiders but the Romanian ones from K-var were ruled non-flash hiders. That's why K-var sold out of them and not the 22mm front sight bases. The K-var ones were popular to adapt to AR15 rifles as non-flash hiders.

The K-VAR one is the smaller of the 2,the comp that came with the 74 kit is the larger sized hole,it was one of the kits from marcolmar. They had a build date of 2008.Can others if you have them checkto see the diameter of theres and possibly gauge them with a bullet or mike!.

Then they should be newer than the K-var ones. Do you know from which arsenal in Romania? Romania has developed a 5.56 AK with an RPK receiver and some versions have that type of muzzle brake.

The 74 kit one made in 2008 is newer,i attached some pics, the K-VAR one is on the left,it measures .325 at the opening where the bullet passes through, the 74 kit one measures .390 at the opening, you can see the difference in the pics, any ideas why they changed. The 2008 one is definately a standard 74 reciever and the barrel is a 5.45.

The Russian 5.45 muzzle brake opening is 0.34" and the Russian 7.62 AK-103 brake is 10.5 mm. I think my K-var one is about 0.33"

I have a MarcolMar AK74 kit I built. I also had the large (with the kit) and the small opening 22mm brake. When I built it I put the smaller opening brake on it vs the one in the kit as it had better outward appearance (original had some wrench marks etc.).
I was underwhelmed at the range in terms of accuracy and the groups sucked. Have not had a chance to get back to try the original brake. Neat rifle but my WASR2 will outshoot it at present. I hope the brake makes a difference. Shooting Bulgarian milsurp ammo.
No idea on why the two diameters.

I noticed the same thing and posted the same basic question on theakforum. No one could answer why the two different size holes. Oh well just another mystery I guess. Jon

Can't answer your Q but the Romy AIMS 74 brake has different external dimensions than the Russian Patterned AK 74 brake, so that may have some bearing.

my wasr2 outshoots my tantal, ssr-74, and romak2. it's my most accurate '74. i paid $300 for it at the end of 2007. it has no comp or brake and the action is a little rough compared to the others, but it shoots great. well over 1000 rounds with no issues.
i was going to sell it to fund a bulgarian fixed stock but how can i get rid of it? it's been hot blued and i have factory honey colored sar furniture on it. it shoots good and looks good.
