View Thread: Cleaning your AK-74

I was wondering what you guys are using for cleaning your AK-74s. I mean, do you use the original Bulgarian rod and cleaning kits (cleaning from the muzzle end), or something different?
Is it OK to use a standard 22 rod and brush in a 5.45 barrel?
I have heard of guys using a standard USGI Kleenbore kit to clean an AK-74, but I am worried that the larger diameter rod might scratch the barrel.

Boresnakes work best for me.

I use a boresnake, and then follw up with a Hoppe's brass rod and .22 cal brushes, mops, etc.
If cleaning from corrosive ammo I use separate brushes, mops, etc... first. then the bore snake and regular brushes, mops, etc.
I keep it clean.

Yes, you are fine using .22 Caliber equipment...I dedicate a set for my 5.45 AK's as I also have 5.56 AK's....Tom

What parts of the 74 need to be cleaned after firing corrosive ammo? Do I need to clean the gas tube where it attaches to the barrel or is that chrome like the bore?

definately clean the gas tube... and get down in the gas block. the gas block is typically chromed..still clean it well. Also the bolt face.. if you dont clean it you will likely find a ring of pitting there from leaky primers.

boresnake, loop it where the brush is and soak it in the hoppes bottle then run it through. i don't use a cleaning rod and patches on any of my chromed bore guns anymore, just the boresnake. i handwash the boresnakes now and then. i clean the gas tube and gas block with hoppes, brass brush, and a rag. the hole itself is self cleaning due to pressure. i use the brash brush on the piston and bolt. i wipe the bolt carrier down with a hoppes soaked rag. i wipe the action out with a paper towel once in a blue moon. then i put a coating of clp on the gun.
