I decided I really want a CZ-52. I've heard nothing but good about them. What you get relative to what you pay and such. What do I need to know before getting one?

I too love these pistols. They do have ther quirks, though. I currently have two I bought the first one to customize, but it came from S. O. G. and was as unissued. couldn't bear to change it! So bought another one that had been rearsennaled. They will have a year stamp on the lower right frame just below the slide that tells the year of reconditioning. 73,77,et; If you look at one of these ,check the barrel for pitting as they mostly used corr. ammo. If you can ,take the barrel out and see if the rollers and roller cam seem to be in decent cond. Most of the problems I have encountered are just from someone not taking the time to completely strip the weapon and remove all the gunk. Firing pins are also a problem as they can break the tip off easily with a lot of dry firing. I replaced the last pin as I was having problems with primer ignition with surplus ammo(hard primers) and put in a wolf 16.5# recoilspring. That solved the problem. Apparently the pin was worn just enough where I couldn't always get reliable ignition. Surplus can be very hot(1600 fps+) so the heavier spring is a good idea. Sarco has surplus barrels for 29.95. Harrington products has hardened rollers and firing pins. Some people say not to trust the decocker as they break and can cause the pistol to fire when used. Again I personallly think they just weren't totally cleaning them. I mean a thorough de gunking and scraping if neccessary!!The trigger pin has a tendency to walk out when firing so stake it in. Also take mags completely apart and clean thoroughly. Good luck!

Thanks. I'll have to keep my eye out at local gun shows for one. Hopefully one will pop up somewhere.

They are fun guns. super cheap to shoot, fsimple to use single action.. the roller locking mechanism is pretty neat looking.

It doesnt have an external slide release, which is a bummer. Also the mag release is a bear to work with sometimes.

Plan on upgrading the firing pin with a hardened steel one.

Never use the decocker

watch out for some types of ammo (extra hot) that was meant for submachine guns, as it was known to blow up cz-52s

Try to find one with the original grey parkerized finish. I have one from '54

Shizzlore
Yeah, from what I have already read about them it seems like the firing pin and decocker are the biggest problems.

I just bought one today from a big gun show in Medina, Ohio. $190 for gun, 2 clips and holster. I bought some ammo for it, that I found out was Polish, and is supposed to have feeding problems? I have had none so far. I really like this gun. I've fired 10+ clips through it so far.

Any suggestions on where to buy a good firing pin?

yeah, decocker is not to be trusted apparently... DON"T USE IT.

with EMPTY magazine inserted, cocked pistol pointed upwards resting on table in front of you.... deploy pencil, eraser tip first, into barrel.

decock pistol....if you see pencil move...you've got a really bad decocker...but this does not necessarily mean you have a good one...it just might work...but I wouldn't trust it.

Some guy put a round through his leg when he dropped it over on the survivor boards. not really sure of the exact config the pistol was in when he dropped it...

makarov.com:

qoute: Decocker - The CZ-52 safety has 3 "settings": fire (rotated all the way down), safe (horizontal, hammer stays back), and decock (rotate up, returns to "safe"). We already know that dry firing is no good, so it seems logical to use the decocker to drop the hammer. However, one reader found the following:

I had a negligent discharge at the range today, downrange and in the dirt fortunately, that scared the shit out of me, and need feedback from you. When I inspected the gun, I noticed that the upswing motion of the decocker actually raises the firing pin disengage (same action as having the trigger fully to the rear). I probably have a worn intercept notch, and it has enough 'play' to spank the firing pin hard enough to fire.

Indeed the decocker raises the firing pin disengage and what stops the hammer from falling appears to be an intercept notch. If this is worn, the firing pin plunger in the slide may or may not stop the firing pin from striking the primer when decocking. Other guns, such as the Makarov have a cam from the safety move directly in the hammer's way. We have yet to rip apart the pistol and determine what causes this. In the mean time please be careful about decocking the pistol with a round in the chamber and do not rely on this mechanism to safely decock the CZ-52!

end qoute

after market firing pins are available...I guess the original ones do break...but i haven't been dry firing mine...

never heard of any feeding issues with Polish or any other type of ammo...

Chrono testing on surp ammo hasn't shown anything hotter than new S&B ammo at 1550...with the surp stuff coming out at low 15's high 14's...

reloading gets ya up to 17's

long barrel goes to 2000! : http://ingunowners.com/forums/bfg_design/38615-the_7_62x25_30_mauser_bolt_rifle_project.html

apparently people have said: The bottom of the chamber is thin. The slot for the rollers in the bottom of the barrel cuts into the chamber strength.

there's just too much don't do this and don't do that on the internet with ammo. some say the tt33 is weaker chamber than the cz-52...others say it's much stronger...

Dont Shoot the m48 Czech ammo in the tt33 but it's ok in the cz-52....and it's poster rated as +P+ minimum....sub gun ammo...

my assumption on all this data available:

the tt33 chamber is stronger than the cz-52.

people are shooting up to 1600 or more with reloads, new powder and bullets...in cz-52

you may get a high powder charge in any surplus ammo as it varies considerably...

your barrel may be of schlocky production quality below RC25-27 and could go POW!!!!!...allthough many rebuff this testing data made by someone.

I shoot romy and yugo surplus....saving my bulgy '50s ammo for my pps-43.

my current tin of '85 romy ammo has cracks after shooting in tt33. seen the same with my cz-52 but no photo...

Don't shoot your cz-52... I'll buy it off you for a good "save face" price.

What I want to know is, will the cracked cases cause any kind of issues? other then maybe not feeding well?

e-man80
Buy one, you wont regret it. I own two. Picked up this one last year just because it has some nice wooden grips, and to keep my other CZ company. :D

where can I buy a vz52? I can't find them anywhere for a decent price

cdwoods
About the only place you will find a CZ 52 is either online at Gunbroker.com or AuctionArms.com If you look around you may latch on to one for about $250.00 to $300.00 I've picked up 2 of these so far and love them. Good Luck Hunting. I've also seen them around the same price in some Gun Shows.
