View Thread: Corrosion? What to do about it?
nameless
I went to the range yesterday with my SAR2 shooting the Russian 7N6 surplus ammo. When I was done I sprayed a mixture of Ballistol and water down the barrel, gas tube, and over the bolt/carrier/piston (after removing them from the rifle).
Once I got home I field stripped it to do a proper cleaning. When I did I noticed some blue discoloration on the end of the gas piston and at the back of the inside of the gas block (I think that's what it's called). I was able to get the blue stuff off the end of the gas piston through normal cleaning, but I can't quite get at the back of that gas block.
So, what I'm wondering is whether that's corrosion I found on the gas tube and inside the gas block, how to get rid of it, and whether the stuff still in the gas block is something I should worry about. Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about it, but definitly remove it. Next time you go to the range squirt some gun oil (not wd40) in that bad boy. The gas piston isn't a big deal because they are chrome lined or ss.
P.S. what kind of finish is on your sar-2? Is it the normal romy crap finish?

So how do I remove it? And are you saying put gun oil in the gas tube before shooting it? Won't the hot gas make a mess of that?
As for the finish, I'm not sure. This is my first AK so I have no point of reference.

Get yourself a plumbers conical shaped brush found in any hardware store. Go to a tobacco shop and buy some wire pipe rods and clean the tube from barrel to front gas block. Should do the trick.
Nothing unusual

If your like me and live well over 100 miles from a tobacco shop you can go to a Sherwin Williams or any store that sells paint guns and find a multitude of cleaning supplies.

I've gfound that a 20 or 12 guage shotgun brush works (cant remember which).

12 gauge works best. Put one end of the tube in hot soapy water, then run the cleaning rod with 12-gauge brush into it from the top. Draw up the water with the brush with each stroke, and do it about thirty times (In and out is one stroke.) Your gas cylinder will be clean as a whistle.

A U.S. M16 or M14 chamber brush on a rod cleans the gas tube quite well too. I drown the AK with 50/50 Castrol Super Clean/Water after removing the furniture. Let sit for 5 minutes then brush everything. Rinse with scalding hot water. Clean beyond belief. Dry then hit everything with Ballistol. -0- rust. -0-

I have never had a problemwith corrosion. I use Balistol and clean with Hoppes. I don't know what the big deal is with the concerns of corrosive ammo. No problems here and I live in a place where the humidity is very high too.
