View Thread: AK74 accuracy

What kind of accuracy can be expected out of an AK74 at 100 yards? I'm fiending for one, but I don't know what to expect at the range. I have heard they are better than ak47's in this regard, but I'd like to hear from some of you first.

I can consistently get center chest hits from a standing firing position at 100 yds with mine using the standard iron sights. Not much of an accuracy test I know, but I am basically saying accurate enough.

Much better than an AK47. It will shoot groups instead of patterns. My SAR-2 willl easily do a 2 inch group at 100 yards with Barnaul ammo, and at 200 yards will shoot about a 3 inch group. I tested it numerous times! That is with a scope, just like the AK47, the iron sights suck. That long bulllet shoots really well at long range, I could hit small rocks at a really long distance pretty easily.

Accuracy is waaayyy beter than AKM in 7.62.

It depends on the rifle type and the ammunition. I have a WASR that shoots well. A Romy AIMS 74 that is not particularly accurate and a couple of Bulgarian's that shoot quite well. The AR with a S&W 5.45 upper still outshoots all the AK's with the same ammunition. The AK74's are a pleasure to shoot and low recoil and pretty accurate. I use Bulgarian and Russian surplus.

I have 3 5.45 AK's that all shoot better(tighter) than the 7.62 guns I have..I love them! I have a few 5.56 guns coming in(AK) that I REALLY want to compare accuracy with. They are Norinco's so I have high hopes about them.
I would choose a 5.45 AK over a 7.62 AK personally for overall survival...Tom

+1 On a slight edge on the group size. The 74 will shoot "Smaller minute of man" groups than the 47s. As stated they are fun to shoot, low recoil, they are a great way to intro a new shooter to the world of AK shooting. One additional + the ammo is still a little less expensive.

I have 5 Bulgarians in 5.45 (one of which is an SBR Krink). The Krink has shot under 2" using the Cobra red dot from the prone, and that's about as good as I'd ever expect it to get. The regular 74s will keep all 30 rounds inside of a 6" circle from the prone using iron sights and firing as quickly as I can re-acquire the front sight which is pretty damned fast considering the almost total lack of recoil. Ammo used for the best group on the Krink was 60gr Wolf, and for the full sized guns I used Bulgarian military surplus.

Wish I could find another.

I had a Wasr yes a wasr that out of the box shot 1.5" groups all day long.
I have a bulgy that shoots 2" groups all day long.
Both are @ 100 yards In most cases it's the person stroking the trigger.
