View Thread: ATI Grip

Just got this today. Put it on my Tantal, Love the feel of it. But, like another grip I tried, it can move slightly if you try to twist it. Is that pretty normal for new grips to do that?

I definitely think the old school, regular style AK grips look the best, but this thing feels really comfortable! it just pisses me off that no grip seems to fit totally snug. I don't want to overly tighten the screw either, and it's pretty tight!

Looks like the Tango grips I run on some of my AR's.

I like the feel of em too.

Should'nt be loose.

Maybe its not seating fully because of the rivet head on the rear of the trigger guard?

Shizzlore
Well the top of the grip looked like it could use some filing, I don't think it's sitting totally flat on the receiver. I'm also not sure how flat the lug is sitting inside the receiver, since this grip is a few degrees different in angle then the stock grip, or original grip I should say.

Are there different lenths of screws? May be it is out of threads.

Shizzlore
The screw is long enough. It is very tight. But the grip still moves. I think the problem may be that the groove for the trigger guard isn't long enough, so it can't sit all the way flat. I think I can fix it with a little dremel work, maybe. But I don't want to screw it up.

Are the trigger guards on Tantals different dimensions then on standard AKM style rifles? I've always heard that ATI products fit great, so this is weird.

Either that or it's not deep enough for that rivet head, or both?

Shizzlore
I checked the rivet head, and the grip clears it, so that's not it.

That is not what I ment. If your threads bottom out and you can not turn the screw in any more it will leave the grip loose.

Shizzlore
Oh, yeah, now I get what you're saying, but that's not it either. The screw is threaded enough, I've checked it to make sure it was going in far enough.

The grip itself is tight, but if you torque it, you can feel it twist.

I could torque my other grip as much as I could and it wouldn't budge(not that I make a habit of trying to get my grip loose).

I've got the same grip on a tantal and it fit right on? Solid as a rock.

Shizzlore
My gun is defective!!! AHHHHH........ No, not really. Just some sloppy work when the grip was manufactured probably. But this is the second grip that hasn't fit securely.

I'm with scaldwelk..., short threads on the grip screw. Does just what you describe.

+2

might be able to run a die over it and cut a few more threads. see if it helps.

Shizzlore
right now, with the grip in place, the bolt is just barely coming through the top side of the lug. If I take out the grip, and put the bolt through, it will thread about an inch through, so the bolt has enough threading.

scaldwellk
Is the bottom of the receiver flat where the grip sits?

Shizzlore
Yeah, I filed down the top of the grip pretty good. I can't believe I found a picture on Google that had the right angle, AND that is the correct grip.

The edge circled in red is touching the trigger guard, and If I dremeled down that a little and the area circled in blue it may sit flat and be secure. Or, I may just screw up the grip and accomplish nothing.
