Just ordered an M44 today.

http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=7006

I have been looking for one for a while but was not willing to go to auction prices and feed the freaks' families over there wanting to charge more than some are worth.

very nice
this guy showed up at the range with an m44 one day while a buddy and i were shootin out mosins
thats gonna be fun

uncledoodoo
I ordered two of them Thursday morning. I haven't seen M44s at that price in a long time. I can't wait to get them next week!

Zx-10R
Yeah man I had not seen any less than $200 that was worth a damn...I am so excited. I will post pics when I line up my guns for a pic again. I have another thread on my guns. This one is cool because it will be the stable mate of my PSL which uses the same round...Yes the PSL uses LB but I use HB Yugo brass which is accurate as heck.

Zx-10R
They said they had some from 45-53...I asked for 45 and he said they had several and would accomodate that request...I hope they do not mess that up. It is shipping today.

Well, what did ya get?!

:)

I'm just waiting on my C&R to get here then, I'm getting a m44. I like the 91/30 but I want a carbine.

The M44 is a good rifle, you're gonna love it.It also shoots a fireball which can also be seen in the daytime.Just remember anything over 50 yds extend the bayonet because these rifles were sighted in with the bayonets extended.

Wyldman
Why would extending the bayonet have anything to with accuracy? Changing the point of balance or ?

Not arguing, just curious.

I heard it was the balance. When I first shot my M44 it would shoot to the left without the bayonet extended. The same thing with my 91/30 ,but it shot to the right without the bayonet installed,So I had to resight the 91/30 ,because the bayonet is too cumbersome. As far as the M44 goes I just extend the bayonet.

13. Q. Why does my M44 shoot so far to the left (or right) of the point of aim?
A. M44s were sighted in with the bayonet extended. Shooting with the bayonet stowed affects the barrel harmonics and can change the point of impact by as much as 1 foot per 100 yards. Not all M44s are effected this much or even at all. Either shoot with the bayonet extended or drift the front sight to compensate for the difference.

I am in CA for July 4th weekend with wife and family and today a meeting in our Oakland HQ...It arrives today but my flight back to WA is at 9:25pm...SO you can bet that once the gun shop I go to opens tomorrow, I am there! I asked for a M44 from 1945...They said they would do that for me...We'll see tomorrow for sure.

This is what I researched as well...A few people at my range have the M44 as well and shoot it with the bayo extended.

Dan's Sporting Goods has them for 143.00$

they're '43s... a couple notches up on the collectible scale compared to the 69.00$ shooters he had a while ago.

but there's still M44's out there for less than 200$ doll hairs

I still haven't got mine, my dealer is on vacation and he's the only one at the shop that can do it. Grrr! Now I'm looking to purchase a K98 so I might leave them in the shop for a few more days while I wait on the new one. I'll let everyone know how they are once I get them.

I am in CA but called the gun shop in WA and they said it is a 1945!!! Seems they had some from 1945-1953...I requested a 45. Hopefully you got a nice one as well. Man I am excited to see the condition it comes in. Did you get it from Wideners as well?

uncledoodoo
yes, I ordered them from Wideners. I wasn't as smart as you to order 1945, almost every one I'd seen before was 43 - 44 so I wasn't thinking about it. Oh well, as long as they're in good shape I'll be happy. Happy shooting!

uncledoodoo
Both are 1948 in seemingly near-unfired condition. The barrels are very bright and shiny with just a little dirt/carbon in them (test-fire?). Both pass the bullet test (no counter-bore). Bluing is 100% on both. All numbers are matching. One stock has a repair near the tang, but I don't mind that on military rifles. Both have cartouches on the butt (one is a Tula re-arsenal stamp, the other is round and faded, not sure what it is). I'll let you know how they shoot, but you better order yours while there is time!

Thanks Wideners!

Zx-10R
I got mine! Izzy 1945!!! I would not call it excellent condition but very good to excellent. All numbers match a small repair on the near the hand guard. According to the Mosin info page it is a 1945 (duh date is on there) but late 1945 not early. I think I scored a great deal and beautiful gun. I am going to refinish the wood as I write this and am going to do the wood Sedona Red. I plan on keeping this as I am not into guns for selling. I am going to the range with it with some buddies who want to shoot this, the PSL, and my WASR...I am sooooo excited. I have plenty of HB and LB so it should be fun.

I am happy you got two sweet 48s. The matching numbers was a plus for both of us and yes the bluing is about 95%+ on mine. Overall I am 9.5/10 happy with the purchase...The repair stinks but it is not a detractor considering the age and overall condition.

I am hoping to find a 44...1945 is for my Dad and 1944 for my mom. Congrats uncle and I'll post how my gun shoots this weekend.

Thanks Wideners!

barrel harmonics. when i put the bayo on my 91/30 it moves my groups about 3 1/2 inches left at 50 yards

4n0nym0u5_545
and this is probably a n00b question
but how can you tell if the barrels been counter bored?

swabbie
the first 1/2 inch or so of the barrel will have been milled to a larger diameter to correct for nicks and dents at the crown which destroy accuracy

hope this helps

It won't pass the bullet test for one thing. Place the bullet in the muzzle end of the barrel, if the bullet goes in all the way to the case, its too big (likely counter-bored), if you look inside the barrel (from muzzle), you'll see a new crown formed from the counter-bore process. Its not necessarily a bad thing, I have a 91/30 that is counter-bored and its a fantastic shooter.

kethcar
I have an M38 thats been counter bored about 1-1/4''. it too is a fantastic shooter.

Zx-10R
Uncledoodoo! I was thinking of your post as you bought 2 and they sent you 2x 1948 year...I called them up this morning when I got to work (just got home) and asked if they had any from 1944...The lady asked for my info which they still had on file and saw I ordered a 45 and told her it was in honor of my dad's birth year...She said that was nice and asked if they had 1944...She asked some guy in the background and he said yeah...One with a star and it is hard to find...I asked if same price...She asked again and he said yes!!! Tula 1944!!! I asked in same condition as 1945...She said pretty much as all of them looked the same! So I ordered another one!

As I stated last night I was redoing the wood on the 1945 and refinishing it as a whole but when I get the Tula 1944 M44 I will put it away as this one is a momento for my mom and not shoot it.

They said they only have a few more M44s left and just a couple from 1944 and 1945. FYI to you guys, I called the place that was distributing them as it said Redmond, WA (a few miles from me) and asked if he would sell one to me direct...He said no but said they were definitely harder to get compared to a few years ago.

As Uncle said, and my 1945 is testament, they are in great condition and for $100 you can not go wrong with this kind of purchase.

My M44 has been counterbored also but shoots great.

I noticed that Century has M44's and 1938 carbines in many different grades, but since I don't have a C&R license yet, can't see the prices. Does anyone know what the price range on these rifles are?

Zx-10R
So I shot the refile...It fireballs like mad, is extremely loud (louder than my PSL) and has a huge kick compared to my PSL, AK, and XR-100. My two friends loved it and the kick...It is definitely exciting to shoot. As for MOA...It is definitely not a tack driver compared to the XR or PSL but does well enough...3 inches and less from 100yrds and 2 inches or less from 50yrds. Might be the smallish size...I shot it with bayo extended and without...Did not seem to matter much but will test this at my range. Was at a different range than I normally go so I will need to check what this rifle can do in a more familiar setting. Overall, I love the rifle and can't wait to get the 1944 tula soon.

People definitely liked it...I refinished the rifle stock and it came out awesome...The 1944 Tula I will leave stock.

uncledoodoo
My experience was the same. This is my first M44 and I must say the fire-ball the size of a Volkswagen is impressive! I'm glad I got it for $100. I prefer the 91/30 as a shooter, but this one is fun to shoot and to look at. I'll definitely keep at least one of them.

Yeah I was shocked! My buddy saw my fireballs going off and was impressed then I saw the huge ones he was getting off. Very fun shooters for sure...Yeah I could imagine the 91/30 as more accurate due to barrel length.

I love it for sure!

uncledoodoo
Did you really get a 44 Tula? I called back and spoke with the tech who pulls them and ships them and he told me he would not look for any special years or condition (just pulls them out of the crate and puts them in the shipping box). He did say he had a bunch of 44s but would not promise one.

I noticed today that they are all out of them.
