View Thread: Case of "Wolf" 5.45mm Hunting ???

Militant comrades!

I've a question - sorry no pics - 'bout a case of 1000-round case of Wolf-brand hunting cartridges. It contains 40 plain white boxes of 25-rounds of 1994-vintage 5.45mm "hunting cartridges" which happen to be FMJ. These boxes are precisely those used back-in-the-day to pack 20-rounds of pre-wolf Tula HP and FMJ: exactly the same, w/ the piss aunt paper intersleves. Each 25-count box features the circle RST figure and triange GIS figure we've seen before.

Question is this. The box says "Hunting Cartridge, 5.45x39-4.45 FMJ LCB, TU 7271-001-07512048-93." What in the world is this stuff ? Sixteen-year old crap I can tell you. No plastic sleeve inside its plain cardboard box. Bought this material at a local fun show 'round four years back. Here's hopin' it'll go bang.

Cartridge cases are puke-green lacquered steel w/ a 5,45 - 39 / [wolf-logo of some sort; a waving Russian Federation flag ???] / 93.

Bullet is a tobac coated full metal jacketed pill.

"Hunting cartridge?" Really? What sort of hunting would one undertake w/ such fodder?

Just asking.

Your opinions and ideal speculations are solicited. Thanks-in-advance.

Just dropped by a conversion site.

4.5 grams = 69.44 grains

Wow, these are heavy bullets. Hope they work in "hunting applications." Yeah, right.

Anyone claim experience shooting these out of SAR-2s? Bulgarian -74 Kitguns?

Please give. Thanks-in-advance.

I think they are lead core bullets based on the military tracer bullets but filled with lead so they are heavy. Wolf has (had) 60 and 70 grain 5.45 bullets. The heavy ones might not stabilize in all barrels, but they might. Non-corrosive is a bonus.

Some of that Early (1993 is early for 5.45x39mm imports) Russian ammo will have CORROSIVE primers even if the packaging states otherwise.

Happens with the Early 7.62x39mm Russian HP

The early 7.62x54R Russian 204gr Softpoints

AND the early B-West Russian 9x18mm Makarov FMJ.

Lightning strikes twice at Chez Archivist Dick.

Just located another thousand-count of "Centerfire Ammuntion, Non-corrosive, Cal 5,45x39 - 4,5[gram], Made to Hunting Specifications, Keep Out of Reach of Children" fodder. Yup ... you guessed it, 70-grain FMJ in 25-round count plain white boxes.

New data. Headstamp: 3 over 97. Cardboard box reads: Ulyanovsk Machinery Plant.

Regards.

I might use it for hunting game for pelts... Those FMJ bullets won't bugger up the coats all that bad (as long as the bullets don't yaw, which is definately going to happen with 5.45X39).

I'm not sure at what depth 5.45 starts to yaw in soft tissue, but you might get by with it for varmint hunting (groundhog, prairie dogs, etc.)
