View Thread: Super Sniper, Nikon, Bushnell, Zeiss, or Burris?

I can't decide.. I need a new scope on my FNAR for hunting big game, coyotes, and target shooting 200-600yds. I'm pretty set on the super sniper 10x, but I've heard that the Nikons are better for the money. I looked through Burris Fulfield II at the range, seemed pretty bright. I have two ancient Bushnells on my bolt guns that have stayed on zero for decades of abuse, but I'm not sure if Bushnells build quality has stayed through the years. I'm mostly concerned about reliability. I like Leupold, but I don't really want to pay for the name. I'm a big fan of fixed power scopes too, as I want to be able to bang it across the rocks and shoot in low light. Any input? I don't want to spend more than 350-400. Thanks.

Lately, I've been playing with a couple of the Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40mmSF riflescopes...
So far, I'm pretty pleased...

I have the 16X super sniper on my custom benchrest rifle and I couldn't be happier with it.

what stock is that?
I'm also looking for the "most bang for the buck" and as much as I like the leupold Mk IVs I just don't see the much higher price justified except possibly in maintaining resale value should I ever need to.
One feature I really like is the side focus. The burris 30mm snipers have that. I think 10 is good for a fixed power but really like the 4-14. I think the 16+ is just too much - at least out here in the desert where you can see the mirage without a scope.
My friend bought a nikon tactical and it was defective - Nikon warrantied it and he had a new one inside a week.
I had a burris with a canted reticle - and burris had a replacment to me inside a week, so warranty wise both are excellent.

what stock is that?I got it from Richard's Microfit: http://www.rifle-stocks.com/ That place is a story in itself... Long story short, great product, horrible customer service.

I built a howa 1500m chambered in 223 and currently have the bushnell 3200 10X elite with mildot setup, and could not be happier. For $175 the scope is everything you could ask for considering the price. The SS 10X is nice as well I have one on a savage FP-LE 308. I tried to take a picture through both of the scopes for a comparison but couldnt get one to demostrate the clarity of both. For the money I would still have to say that the bushnell is perfect, the only downside to the bushnell is that I have yet to find a sunshade.

Also if you are strongly considering the SS 10X another option might be the Falcon Menace 4-14 many have compared it to high end leupold etc. Here is a link

By the way, Mark, do you know what the problem was with the Nikon Tactical...?
Or what the symptom was...?

I don't remember, sorry.

Nikon produces in Japan and the Philippines. Phillippine glass is half the cost but held to the same standards. I have two Nikons, love'em.

I decided to get a fixed power for durability.

Super sniper 16x. I have the SS 16x on my Serbu BFG 50. NEVER had a issue with it. Great scope, clear optics and tough as nails.

+1 on the ss I have their 10x side focus model on my m1a1. GREAT SCOPE. I'd take it over my burris xtr.

I called swfa about the "SS" 10x scope. They told me the warranty was given through Bushnell. I was looking at buying something in a fixed power. I figured that if the warranty for the "SS" was through Bushnell the Bushnell Elite 3200 10X Mil Dot would be pretty close to the same scope. I only got a chance to compare the two at a gun show and they were not side by side. Both seemed clear and sharp. I could not see any major difference in clarity on either one. I bought the Bushnell and saved a little money.

hmm.. sounds good to me. my bushnells have remained excellent (they are ancient, not sure if bushnell is still as good)

It's not on your list but I've always been impressed with the Cabela's "Alaskan Guide" scopes. I have the 4.5-12X44
on my Weatherby. I am not sure who manufactures them for Cabela's but I have always suspected they are made by Leupold.

More likely tasco....

I own several of the scopes you mentioned, I have several Leupold VariXII's, a few Pentax in various powers, a cople of Nikons, as well as a pair of Burris and a bunch of Bushnell scopes.
The one brand of scope you mentioned that I don't now and will NEVER own again is the TRASHCO who makes the SS. I have had a couple of them over the years but have never yet had one that was worth a damn, the warranty on them also bites really bad and there "quality control" in NON Existant!
As for Bushnell, I have quite a number of them, I use them on any of my rifles I want to scope but dont want to spend a lot of money on doing so.
I have them on everything from .270 WSinchesters, 30-06 down to Ruger 10/22's and have always have excellent service from all of them, Bushnell also bought Bausch&Lomb a few years back and further improved a already good product, it seems B&L decided it wasn't "politicly correct" to make "Gun Sights" Oh Well... There LOSS!
Anyway, in my opinion the Bushnell is going to be the best buy for the least cost and then the Burris, Leupold's, Nikons and others mentioned are all excellent scopes.
I know myself I make it a point to avoid anything made by tasco (aka trashco) like the plague!
Of course everyone will agree though, Scopes are a matter of personal preference in the end. I personally have grown to really like the Pentax Brand Scopes as well as the Leupolds but unfortunately they aint cheap.
Good luck on your purchase, swfa is a really good place to buy from as I've bought several scopes from them over the years.

Correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure that SS scopes are now serviced through bushnell. I have a SS 10x with side focus and have not had any problems with it, and being that they are no longer owned by tasco I dont see any warranty issues being a problem.
