Just bought a Mosin 91/30 yesterday with a buddy.
It was a "you buy one and I will" kinda thing
So we bought them
$137 and change from Gander Mountain
Mines on the right and his is on the left
Both are Izzy's, Mines 1943 (I named her "Lidia" and his is 1942 (Still waiting on a name), matching numbers, all that fun stuff

And yea, thats my Civic w/ fart-cannon they're leanin against

We went to Dunhams Sports for ammo because I was certain I saw cheap surp there (I was mistaken) and ended up with a box of Winchester 180 gr. FMJ for $24.99 (overcharging bastards! It didn't shoot too bad either. But hey, maybe I'll get into reloading and create some SICK handloads,). Went to the range, fired all 20 rounds in the box and fell even more in love with this gun.

What types of surp. or manuf. ammo do these rifles like? We just threw down on 440 rounds of 149gr. Bulgarian copperwashed-steel cased surplus cause it was cheap and it was an impulse buy (the guns were too, actually). And my bayonet doesn't want to go on the barrel far enough to twist and lock it on, any suggestions on how to make it work?

Congrats on the 91/30 rifles. They are great shooters with history (if ya care).. The Bulgarian light ball is good ammo. Be sure rto clean your rifle as that ammo is corrosive. No big deal, but unlike the commercial stuff you paid $1 + a rouind the Bulgarian needs cleaning up afterward. Bolt face and chamber area too. Have fun.

history was a major factor to me in the purchase. i know whats up when it come to cleanin corrosive ammo (i usually only buy corrosive 5.45 for my wasr-2 cause its so cheap). im lookin into a ww2 era pu scope for it because i want an actual "sniper rifle", but what ive found is expensive so far so itll be a while still

yeah, my bayo acts the same way...be thankful it's tight so when you need it ....

try to get some heavy ball Bulgy yellow tip.

sportsmans guide is usually competitve with certain ammo if you're a member...

go here: gun-deals.com and ammoengine.com

those two places will put you ball park for decent deals.

stop buying commercial ammo...you'll be broker than a snake before ya know it... BUY BULK TINS for the best deal.

there is no ammo they don't like to eat except for an old batch of czech heavy ball that I had which the casings were out of spec

welcome to the club.

these bang sticks are crowd pleasers at the range.

you can leave it as is or get the ball bearing trigger mod, Darryl's Scout scope mount, cork the barrel, recrown, bed the receiver, refinnish the wood.

just remember to clean it after shooting surplus ammo.

fart cannon...lol...

oh, and stop leaning them against cars...that high gloss finnish of yours doesn't give that Mosin much of a chance to stay upright...

i only bought commercial cause i just bought her, was excited, and wanted to shoot and it was convenient. luckily i have some tins that shipped today, so hopefully those are at my doorstep by monday because i really want to go shoot the mosin again (im addicted). and i wanted some brass in case i decide to start reloading

as far as the mods, i didnt know they made trigger mods for something so old, so im definately going to look into that. im not really feelin the scope mount though. id like to keep it historically accurate as far as optics go so im lookin for a pu or a pe scope. refinnishing the wood is also something i'd like to do and have been gathering info about.

fart cannon, universal term, even though i dont think 2.5" header-back exhaust is technically a fart-cannon (seein as the higher flow of larger pipe actually does a little for performance and makes forementioned cannon sound good, whereas just a fart cannon just makes the car sound like death), and the guns were leanin for just a second so i could snap a pic real quick

I've got one on my 91/30--works great. If he's got em in stock you'd better buy it, cause he makes em in batches for the different rifles.

If he's out of one, you wait a long time until he has another batch built :sleep_sma

Also, get an inexpensive cheek rest or prepare for turkey neck :rofl_smal

thats what everything i've found about the mount is saying. i want to throw one on to see the rifles true potential with optics, but just how far forward it's mounted is unappealing to me, even though the gun with this setup may be beautiful to others.

they say beauty's in the eye of the beholder, and true beauty to me is a ww2 pu setup :) plus i like the reticle

Congratulations! These guns are more fun than a clown on fire. Nothing better than setting out in the woods with a couple hundred rounds of Bulgy to burn. I think I'll buy a couple more today, I have two and its just not enough.

go with the std PU or PE set up or the darrel's mount.

I haven't shot the PU or PE setup yet..I keep thinkin I'll come across one when somebody needs the money :small_gri

I have the scout mount setups on my Ishie, and my 91/30..with cheek rests I like them just fine

Shot an Appleseed with my Ishie and stripper clips using 50 yard poop loads...it was a gas..waaay more challenging than with an AR

4n0nym0u5_545
Im biding my time till i run across a pu setup. im accurate out to 300 with an ar using irons (military training methods, from 80's cold war era ex-military) so 50's not too much of a challenge to me

im from grand rapids, mi so theres not really too many woods to just tromp around in around here (the outdoors land we shoot at is a hill on the side of the road on 20 mile), but im gonna take a trip to the u.p. at some point in the near future and live off the land for a week or 2, bringin only bare necessities (emergency mre's,water purification gear, first aid supplies, clothes, my mosin with ammo, hand held radio just in case, nav equipment, etc)

my bulgy 440 rd. tin came today.....without an opener. so i just took a cotter pin puller and made small punctures in the top and used a flat head and a hammer to go from hole to hole until i could bend it open enough to get my precious 11 boxes out (went halves with a buddy). looks good and i cant wait till range day
