I've been looking for a Gen1 or Gen2 NV scope that I can put on my AR, but can also be detached and used as a monocular w/ a head mount kit. I did a search here and found a few good reviews about the Yukons. Any other brands I should be looking at? I'd like to keep the price tag under a grand so I think thats going to rule out any Gen2 stuff. Helpful suggestions and comments appreciated. :)

You aren't going to get anything that you can use without IR dependence for 1k.

You won't be able to distinguish anything @ 100 m without IR on.

With IR on, you have a big target on YOU.

You need to go at least Gen2+ to have anything really useful in the dark. Gen2+ is much cheaper than 3 and close to the same performance.Gen 3 is great and 4 is just overpriced.

Gen 1 and 2 are okay to show your buddies and play with when your bored. With Gen 2 being FAR better than 1, which is all but utterly useless without IR illumination.

Gen 2 is pretty grainy and dark with too many sparkles but it works pretty decent out to 100m or so, depending on the tube quality and ambient light.

Like I said IR illumination makes YOU a big target. And the sad thing is,, you probably STILL won't be able to see them with cheap Gen 1 or crappy gen 2.

Good info. Am I asking for to much when I want a NV scope that can also be attached on a head mount? I was thinking I could kill two birds with one stone and only have to buy one piece of equipment, but if necessary I'll just pick one over the other. What other manufactures should I be lookin at besides Yukon? ATN? ITT? Keep the helpful info and suggestions coming fellas!

Oooops dupe post ,,see below

As far as a head mount/weapon mount you can go with the AN/PVS 14 and an Eotech with the IR mode.

I had one, for a while and it works well. Navigation with a NVG on 1 eye and nothing on the other is kinda weird imho.

I prefer the pvs 7 for moving.

ITT and Litton EOS will never do you wrong. But they are pricey. You can check Ebarf, they have quite a few for sale 24/7.

ATN seems to be pretty good kit with a reasonable price. Go at least gen 2+ or 3 and you will never look back wishing you would have just spent more and got a LOT more capability.

Pay particular attention to the LPI and detection/recognition range

LPI is just like your TV set. more is better.

Signal/noise ratio is the little sparkles you see with the unit on.

Less is better there.

Hope this helps

gen 1 is way too heavy for head mount. under a grand, unlikely with the head mount requirement. find a unit that fits your needs then search ebay.

Thanks guys.

PVS 7's are nice. A cigarette looks like a flashlight.
When you puff it, it looks like a campfire.
Seriously.

I got to check out a Litton Aquila 3 NVS on a suppressed
m16. He paid $7K for the scope several years back.

You could see the barbwire at 400 yards with over
cast no starlight with no illumination. The only
light available was an outdoor bulb 75 yards to our
rear.

Hell of a scope.
