Is it suffering from an identity crisis?

Parts guns are my favorite

I won a pistol slide at a state pistol championship, once and had bought or traded

for enough parts to build a complete pistol before I left for home :laugh_sma :laugh_sma

Didn't even know I needed it :laugh_sma

Yeah, they're fun building.

Mine started with a pitted bore Yugo M59/66 and received a Chinese Type 56 barrel. Of course, the gas tube needed to be replaced too. This one was from a Chinese fiberglass Jungle stock.

Did you do the rebarrling on it? Can you offer any insight to the job? I am planning on the same sort of thing. Most interested in what type of vise you used and the action wrench. Any issues with getting headspace right?

Thanks

First, I soaked both the Yugo barrelled receiver and the Chinese barrel with cut receiver in PB Blaster with a plastic bag overnight. The Chinese barrel was a complete layer of rust on the outside, but the bore was perfect.

Then I had to move the piston block on each. I just punched out the pin, tapped the block forward far enough to get a (good quality) 22mm wrench across the flats, placed the receiver in a vise and used a 3' pipe over the wrench for leverage (quick, concentrated umph!). Once it broke loose, it turned out by hand (right hand threads).

Indexing was a bit tricky, only in the fact that the index mark on the barrel of the Chinese was stamped for the original chinese receiver, and when lined up with the mark on the Yugo receiver, was about 5 degrees off from lining up the gas system and front sight. By backing off the index marks about an eight of an inch, it lined up perfectly and I punched a new index line.

I also prick punched the collar in a couple of more places to ensure that no movement would occur during firing. As for headspace, I may have just gotten lucky. But with the cover off, I selected a spare bolt that seemed to capture a chambered round with the least movement. I had three bolts to choose from and one was slightly tighter than the other two.

No issues with protruded or pierced primers, and it cycles perfectly. If I had issues, I would have had to have the headspace checked.

Right now this is quite a gem and I'm giving it to my son in a refinished form for his College graduation. Here's some before and after pics, and my wife posing with our son's present.
