Hello all. I just bought a Saiga SGL20. I would like to put wood grips and stock on it. Can anyone tell me what would fit? Will wood furniture off a Bulgarian AK-74. work?
Dragonwolf
First you would need a lower hand guard retainer and a gas tube off of an AK 74
and also would have to convert your weapon.
Check out www.dinzagarms.com lots of parts and info

The sgl20 is already converted by arsenal. I think that the stock and gribs that it has are from kvar. So couldn't I use the gas tube that it has on it?
Dragonwolf
IF it is already converted then any thing that fits a stamped receiver will work

Thanks dragonwolf. I was looking at the forward grips and i cannot figure out how to get the plastic grips off the gas tube. Any suggestions? And where do you get the besel that goes around the back portion of the lower wood grips?

The furniture on your SGL-20 is the modern up to date most advanced Ka;ashnikov stock and handguards available today . All Kalashnikovs manufactured in the last two decades , have been made from polymere with heat shields , this is indistructable , non wearing ,and the heat shield in the lower handguard insures more trigger time before it is to hot to hold . the SGL-20 represents a civilian AK-103, an advanced, probably , final version of a sixtytwo year old design . to be correct with the features on this rifle you should , in my opinion ,leave it in its original , as issued configuration .Any wood other than yugoslavian , would fit this weapon ,but wood stocks have no use in the twentyfirst century . If you really want a wood stocked Kalashnikov , add a romainian or some other AKM to your collection, you will be wanting more Kalashnikovs anyway and the other varients are appropriate with wood , Yes wood is good looking , but even more good looking is the right stocks on the right weapon. I have a SGL-20 I recently aquired, the only thing I would do is add the 100 series folding stock it should have come with anyway, but I now do not plan to. These I believe , are the BEST and most accurate Kalashnikov on the market yet in 7.62x39 , even more so than any of my preban weapons. These are just the opinions of a grumpy old collecter and shooter, that wants everyone to do what I think is right , so just ignore me, as I am just full of shit anyway. So do as you like and good luck..

Thanks yoda and omega. I am going leave her as is. Just really like the dark red wood. I found out that if i did change the grips and stock that I would be out of 922r. The only thing that I have found stamped U.S. on this rifle is the plastic grips and stock. Omega is your sgl the warsaw or nato length? I found after shooting my rifle that my cheek bone hurt. Maybe i didn't have the butt into my shoulder so good. Thanks guys

My SGL-20 is warsaw length, the stock works great for me , they figure most will have a heavy coats or combat gear on . The russians are all size people ,most seem to be pretty big,yet thier stocks are shorter than what Americans like . The trigger group ,hammer ,disconnector , and trigger are made in America by Arsenal ( everything that K-var sells ) , the front sight is Bulgarian ( compare contours and mold numbers ) everything else is Russian besides the furniture .

I have Kalashnikovs with variuos folding stocks, and some of them bite my cheeck pretty good , but they dont get fired all that much, mostly carried for thier compactness . When operating my tractor in rhe fields on my property,I have a beat up Romainian with a wire folder and K-var handguards hanging around my neck every minute , and a folder in my vehicles , usally that same romainian . The finish is very worn off , and with all the dust and dirt accumulating on and in it , being a Kalashnikov it still works. I am now going to look for a Izhmash marked late style bayonet to go with my SGL-20 ,anyone have an idea ?

I have two AR15 and this is my first AK. But shooting AK is alot different. I had bought a russian sks the same time that I got the sgl20. The sgl20 has a harder kick than the sks. Omega how is the finish on your receiver? Mine is a little spotty.

Arsenal refinnished the SGL-20s after they welded up the holes for the rear part of the Saiga trigger group for the conversion . The top cover is the original Izhmash finish , but niether company is noted for the durability of thier paint finish .My finish is pretty even, but starting to show shiney wear on sharp edges , I like a weapon that looks that way , but thats just me. Go to arsenals web sight and look at the warrenty write up, they tell you to use only break free CLP , and anything else will void your warrenty .Using hoppes #9 or gun scrubber will eat the finish for lunch and ask for more , really it will, the break free is great for cleaning and lubeing anyway. I got rid of any of the other cleaners I used to use , lest I forget . some parts on the SGL-20 are parkerized with no paint over them , this is correct for Izhmash weapons . the FCG pivot pins and sight leaf are light gray parkerize , and if it had the poly folder, the latch buttons would be also grey . another thing about the SGL-20 most dont know, is that regular Saigas put a deformation in the fired case mouth , and our weapons dont do that ,SGL-20s have true military barrels . Russian LEOs wanted civilian rifles to " mark" the case so they no what manner of Kalashnikov it came from ( lots of Rusky Mob owned Kalashnikovs I guess.) .As far as the recoil goes My weapon seems to be lighter recoiling than my others .the muzzle brake really works pretty good, you do have a muzzle brake ? mine did not come with one, but they are supposed to be on these rifles, I already had one I got from K-VAR last year ( a company owned by Arsenal ) it is bulgarian and the paint came off that with one swipe of hoppes#9 ,luckily it was parkerized underneath. If you dont have one of these, get one , they do work ! mine seemed to get smother as it got broke in more. Go to the website called avtomats in action by a guy named tantal . I dont know fancy computer stuff or I wuold make the link thing happen. I spend alot of time on that site, thier is a lot of info there , Our rifles are basically AK-74M in the older 7.62 cal. now called AK-100 series , the evolution of the 74 section is particularly fascinating , the details will amaze you , these kind of things are better than sex to me, but then im old and obsesseed anyway . look forward to your next post.

Thanks Omega. I will have to check that site out. Mine came with the muzzle break. I only got to put about 40-60 rounds down range with the SGL. On top of that I had my sks that wanted some range time also. Plus my two ar15. I am at the point where it is hard to decide what to take to the range. I don't remember the last time that took my M1 out. Ammo is really hard to find at a good price around here. That is why I bought the sks and sgl. Now I cant even find ammo for that. So far I am happy with the sgl. I had order a lancaster arms AKM before I got the sgl. But they were taking to long to build mine. They were going on 2 months. So I just canceled the order. Thanks again. Talk to you later.

Try J&G sales in Arizona I just ordered a case of brown bear 7.62x39 FMJ for $279 on monday ,they said they recieved a large load and have been getting ammo in every week ,you just have to call them ,since their web site always says out of stock . I have never used brown bear , but is advertised as Mil-spec.I have used Silver Bear FMJ with what the call on the box th "Effect bullet" ,I ground one down and thier is a hollow cavity under the jacket in the nose and a little nipple or tit on the nose (wierd) they shot like match grade. I would buy them again . I look forward to getting the new book coming out by Frank Iannamico called the Grim Reaper about the Kalashnikov , over 800 pages . I have many Kalashnikov books and it looks like after an 800 page book what else can you tell about this type of rifle . Iannamicos other books are very complete about thier respective firearms . talk later..
