View Thread: Out of State sales

Hi guys,
I am about to put up a few of my rifles for sale. I have searched RKBA and not found my answers. I live in Michigan, the sale may go out of state.
Questions:
1 Can I legally ship it myself to an approved FFL?
2 Do I have to send it from my FFL to theirs?
3 The box may have ammo, is that a problem.
4. can ammo be shipped by me and through what carrier?
5 How does one create a bill of sale for an audit trail and what has to be on it, does a fax copy work... what if they don't comply
does my ship receipt consitute the sale, even though its only going to a FFL
any help, trust me I searched for this info

Questions:
1 Can I legally ship it myself to an approved FFL? Yep
2 Do I have to send it from my FFL to theirs? If their FFL is dick, yes. By law, no. I have a bit of boilerplate in my sales ads that say the receiving FFL must accept from private individuals.
3 The box may have ammo, is that a problem. Shipping ammo is a lot less problematic than shipping firearms, but you can't ship them in the same box.
4. can ammo be shipped by me and through what carrier? It can be shipped UPS or FedEx with an ORMD - 'small arms ammunition' label.

Just keep the receiving FFL's license info (write your guns info on the page) and if anyone comes looking, just send them to that FFL.

Yes.Rifles can be shipped USPS,UPS or FEDEX.

Some FFL's will not accept from non FFL's.If this is the case make sure you add to your sale that a transfer fee to cover your cost with your FFL will be added to final cost if thier FFL will not accept shipment from non FFL.
3 The box may have ammo, is that a problem.
Ammo cannot be shipped in the same box as a firearm.
4. can ammo be shipped by me and through what carrier?
UPS and FEDEX,put ORMD SMALL ARMS AMMO stickers on box.

Copy the PM's or emails, threads from a site like the AKfiles or copy the auction page and any e-mails from sites like Gunbroker,Auction Arms,MGO ect. Also keep all FFL info you receive. When I sell a firearm I write on the copy of the FFL license name and address of purchaser, date of sale, serial # of gun ect.
any help, trust me I searched for this info

Thanks Nalioth,
I did the following searches "selling a rifle, out of state sales, shipping a rifle, and shipping ammo. Got a few bits and pieces but no stuff like you just sent.
I have a UPS terminal and a Fex Ed terminal within 20 miles of me. Will they ship a rifle for me? What about insurance on a lost or stolen rifle, as I have heard horror stories about this.

swoopsSwoopster,it will be cheaper if you set up your own account with FEDEX or UPS.Adding insurance is an option offered when filling out online shipping info. All you need is a credit card and printer. You can drop off to a UPS driver in town or you can also take your package to several pick-up points in your city or you can drop them off at the terminal.
