View Thread: These Two SKS's Were Irresistable (Pics)

In the never ending pursuit of gathering SKS's, I found two more "must have" models last week.
http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/hunter_and_M59_sks_001.jpg
Top: A Chinese Paratrooper fitted with the five round internal 'hunter edition' magazine, and a very clear optic 4 X 20 scope on the cheap receiver cover mount. Get this..... $150!
Middle: A Yugo M59 with all matching #'s and near perfect metal, bore and furniture with two boxes of ammo for a little more.... $200!
Bottom: A barrelled Yugo M59/66 receiver with all the blocks and sights to begin a another project gun. $30
More pics.

Seems they can't stop following me home... like they know I'll feed 'em or something!

Nice, and the M59 looks good. For $200 that was a nice pickup. My buddy has a M59 also but it does'nt look quite as good as the one you got. They are sorta rare too.

Good scores!
That 59 stock looks like its been redone.
Mine sure doesnt look like that.

do you want a bayo for the Paratrooper I have one with the spring and bolt its a short spike one.

Nice martin! That is the first 5 round mag I've seen. I passed on a Yugo59/66 at the big Louisville, Ky. show a couple weeks back for $150.00. The bore was horrible! Rusted, No rifling left, It would have been good for a barrel change out.

Disassembly revealed a deep, rich red on the inside. So I got out a heat gun and removed about eight layer's worth of brown boot ploish. Yuk!
Next time the Yugo is in a pic, it's going to look Marvelous!

It's the third 5 round mag fro myself, now. I like to say that the mag went for $150 and the surrounding Paratrooper was thrown in as an extra!
I'd stay away from that Yugo with the bad bore for now. As you can see I have a barrelled receiver and will let everyone know if a chinese barrel works.

Thanks for the thought Junkmanted, I've already got one.

I'd like to find out how rare??? Plenty of 59/66's out there.
This M59 feels and looks more substantial than any or my other 11 SKS's. The blueing is impeccable and the milling in both the stock and receiver is so square and smooth that none of my others come close to comparing in quality.
I haven't even shot it yet, so the jury's still out on it. But right now it's a keeper.

If I remember right, Martin. The Yugoslavian M59 was made from 1959 to 1966 with just over 200,000 rifles made.
The stock is made of Beechwood unlike the 59/66's which is teak, even though some 59/66 Beechwood specimans do exist
They switched to the 59/66's in 1967 which have, believe it or not, lower production numbers.
I bet yours has a C prefix before the serial number and would make it a 1966 production rifle and one of the last.
Mine is a C with B's being rarer.
Prefix A's are not known to exist. At least to collectors.
martin08
Right on, Black wolf, mine is a C-serial#
And after a good cleaning and Tung oil, it's a whole new look. I'll post pics when she's dried and buffed.

Here's what she looks like now. I'm not sure the pics do it justice, but to the naked eye, The M59 is now a shining thing of beauty compared to the dull boot polish look.

That looks sweet. :cool_smal
I was wondering how one would look in the tung oil.
Think i'm going to do the same to mine.
How many coats is that?
mosinutty
Martin, Did you apply the Tung oil directly over the original finish? It looks great! I would like to do the same to my Russian if I can put it over the original finish.
martin08
It was a real b**ch to find out what the real color of the gun was! There was so much goop on it that I had to break it down to see that it is a very deep brownish red beech stock.
It took over an hour with a heat gun and rag to "boil" the boot polish out of it, then some more time with steel wool to prep the scratches.
Three coats of tung oil, with a 4-5 hour dry time inbetween, using steel wool to work the first coats into the pores, and to lightly scratch up the last coat before dry-cloth buffing. A two day project!
I'd do it all again for another one that just needs a little lovin' and attention!
I still haven't shot it yet!
