I've been thinking about getting a SIG P220 in .45ACP, like the way they feel, not yet shot one, just the P226 in 9mm.

Just wondered if anyone has one or has shot them before, you know just to share their views kinda thing. Really intrested in accuracy at 25M/Yds with either reloads or factory FMJ ammo.

Needs to be like this, fixed sights and used by the military, comp rules and all.

It is an excellent handgun. If you like DA,s which I don't, and you like the 8 round mag capacity (which I don't).

I prefer the Glock 21, but it is too big for some people. The Springfield XD has a smaller grip than the glock for the same mag capacity.

But there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Sig - I've done custom work on hundreds of them - mostly just smoothing the DA stacking. Get one that has a dovetail front sight, the older model it was fixed adding expense if you go with night sights. I also prefer a smooth trigger to the original serrate, but thats easy to change. the grip is very comfortable.

Thanks for that Mark, it's gonna be a new one if I get one. Intresting about the Glock 21, I find my 1911 a little small in the grip and found that the SIG felt better, like you say it's very comfortable.

So is the Glock grip bigger than the P220?

I don't own one, but:

Several of my friends own Sig 220's, and they all rave about them. They claim the Sigs are extremely accurate and well made. This comes from a group of people well versed about firearms. I believe at least one of them uses the Sig 220 in competitions.

Another friend who doesn't own one calls them "ugly-assed boat anchors".....and "the slide sits too high on the gun to feel comfortable, doesn't feel right when the gun cycles."

Well, that's the rumor anyway. Hope that may help.

I want to check them out a bit more too. Might get one if I like them, mags seem a bit expensive.

I kind of like the P220 "Elite" and the ghetto'd out "Super Match" models with the beaver tail and wood grips. They don't look quite right to me without the beaver tail.

The Glock 21 is a lot fatter. I don't like the 1911 grip either - feels like I'm holding a wood plank. I like to fill it out a bit.

Thanks again fellas.

Yup, it's an ugly SOB alright but needs must. Can't say I like the lines and dots either, not exactly paper punching friendly.

Intresting point about the slide '39 and the mags...they are expensive and SIG olny give you one with the gun.

The 226 I borrowed from a pal and shot last year in several comps, I did really well with (even managed to win a couple) kinda set the idea a burning in my head. My SA 1911 TM is way outside the competition rules so seeing a dealer reacently with a P220 for sale got me thinking.

Well, I only know one person who doesn't like them, the rest love em, especially for accuracy.

Thought I'd give all the opinions I've heard from credible sources.

And yes, the friends who own the P220's also own P226's and love them too.

Sigs are very high quality handguns. A friend of mine sold a Sig P220 when things got a little tight. He sold it for an absolute steal, but unfortunately, I was broke at the time too.

I still think my 1911 A1 feels the best in my hand out of any I have ever held. The XD-45 I have has a lot better mag capacity, but it is much heftier. The only thing I don't like about my XD is it takes a bit of getting used to for someone who has never had a plastic framed gun. It is a completely different feeling gun with 4 rounds left in it, than when you have 14 left in it. It gets very top heavy as the mag gets empty. It has great balance when it's full, but it deminishes with each shot. Despite my criticisms of my XD, it still outranked my 1911 to take first place in the nightstand because of it's double-action feel (the slide actually cocks the striker, so by definition its not a true double action) and superior mag capacity.

I can shoot better with the 1911, it feels better in my hands, but that XD is a beast.

Oh man, I know....thing is I'm planning on trading in my SA-1911-TM, love the thing but needs must.

Those XD's do look great, never had hold of one but they sure look fine....better looking than the SIG.

SIG's are a fugly IMHO, especially when you compare them to the graceful lines of the venerable 1911.

the sig is a fantastic "work gun"

although if the handgun ban ever gets reversed (im not holding breath) then it would be a pair of 1911's on day one for me :small_gri

I have a XD-45 5" Tactical Model. It's a handful, even for guys with big hands. The Sigs I've handled are well-built pieces of machinery. The only thing I don't like about them is they have a tall slide for me. It just seems like the sights are about an inch and a half too high for me. It's all in what you get used to, and I was raised on a 1911. I had a SA Mil-Spec 1911, and now I have a SA GI-45. Both are awesome guns, I just wanted a 45 with double-action feel and greater mag capacity. The Glock was cheaper, but once again, the grip angle on a Glock throws me way off. The 45 Glock has a huge grip, even bigger than the XD-45. Shot a buddy of mine's .40 Glock with the ported barrel, and that one fit better in my hand than any other Glock, but not as good as the XD.

I will be the first to tell you that the fit/finish on the Sig is lightyears ahead of any of my 45s (before someone lashes out at me, I don't own any Kimbers), but I'm a sucker for a 1911 A1's feel in my hand.

That's great! :small_gri

You get to go more frequently than I do right now. :(

I am jealous.

Sometimes I get the impression handguns and long arms are almost impossible to own in the UK.

Glad to know you still get to enjoy our collective passion. :AR15firin

So how big is the club you belong to? Does it have a website?

Well no go on the P220.....drove an hour and a half to the gunshop to discover they didn't have one! I guess I shouldn't believe their website..they couldn't tell me whan they'd have one in stock either...bummer.....the bonus was getting to examine an original MP44 which was for sale/on hold for €2,000!

and why are we not being very jealous of you posting pics of it on the range then? 2grand seems quite a good price from what ive seen...

the law is restrictive, but theres a few things we can own - long arms are relatively easier (non semi auto obviously) but most forces dont turn their noses up too much at long barrelled handguns.
no website for club im afraid, think theres about 60 or so members

Good question...

Apart from it being 'On Hold' for another customer it had been rechambered in 8x35 WTFIT......??????

Best not ask about that...But I did...it's one of those wierd calibres special to France to get the rifle into a lower catagory. It would seem that it's made from 6mmBR cases which get expanded upto 8mm??? Sounded like a whole lot of hassle to me.

Yes, that is rather odd.

Kind of like going to the prom with the fat sister of your real date, and the fat sister is wearing the other's dress like a sausage stuffed into the wrong sized casing.......but you put it on the grill anyway.

Yeah, I know that doesn't make sense.

There'll be another P220.

It is isn't it, it's even more wierd when you take into consideration that the lower category requires the exact same amount of paperwork and runs for the same length of time.

It's a truely historical piece ruined in my opinion. Still, if they'd have put an M1 Garand on the counter along side the German crap...the M1 would have come home with me instead!!!!!

I got exactly what you meant bud. :)

Not the most stunning 25M target I'll admit, but it was my first outing with it.

Shows promise...probably more than me. :cry_small

Very Nice!!!!

Looks like a excellent group at 25m, especially first time shooting it.

You devil, I've been thinking of one of these for months, and now you're tempting me into getting one.....

Shot a friend's M1A yesterday, and I shot really well with it......hmmm, got me a thinking.

Ya'll are gonna have me financially ruined.

Thanks bud.

Well your earlier post kinda closed it for me, so couldn't believe my luck when they had one in over the weekend.

Think I just need to work on my trigger control now. :smile_sma

You NEED that M1A!

I have had a couple of 220's and a 245 (no longer made) and I really like them.
My current 220 has the DAK trigger. I'm not a big fan of DAO, but this seems ok.
Glock 21's grip was way too big for my hand. I also have Springfield XD in .45 and I think I like it best.
