View Thread: SKS bore diameter's

Slugged the bores on a couple of SKS's for reloading purposes.
Yugo 59/66=.313 Norinco=.312

I'll be able to safely load British 303's @ .312 diameter being that it is getting difficult to find 7.62x39 bullet's.

Interesting. Let us know what formula you come up with for optimal load. I'm starting to think along the same lines.

you may find some 150 gr soft points which have a short enough ogive to crimp, but most 303 and 7.62x54 bullets are too long/slender to crimp adequately in a semi auto.I have tried approx 20 of most bullet manufacturers products....they won't crimp securely.

that Lee CTL 312-160 will be exactly what you need along with some AA1680 or similar powder..I couldn't get 2400 to work the action reliably.shoot them as cast..a couple coats of alox and a gas check...you will be good to go.

Find a spare gas tube and drill a couple of extra holes in it..you won't have to chase the brass as far :rofl_smal

if you desire, follow the directions on "Mold beagling" on the castboolits site and open up that mold a lil....say to .314...then order a .314 sizer from Lee,,,you've probably got one for your Mosins already

Finest kind..you should get 5 or 6 firings from your brass, assuming you don't lose it :wink_smal

Thanks swabb. I'll probably use the mold as is, We were just messing around Sunday and decided to slug em. I was having a hard time locating any brass and had loaded all I had. I did pick up 100 at a show the other day but I paid $30.00 for it, none to be found on the web anywhere. I went to a shop yesterday out of town and lucked into some Winchester once fired for $10.00 per 100. He had 2 bags. Now I've got to get to casting!:wink_smal

Went to the big show in Louisville Ky, Sat. and found that all SKS's were going for $375.00 to $400.00 Russian and Chicom's. I was able to locate everything on my list. SKS sling's, Strippers, cleaning rod's, weaver base scope mounts. No 54R or x39 ammo to be found! And usually it is in abundance at this show. One table had x39 for $8.50 per 20!:rofl_smal Did see a Westinghouse Mosin for $395.00.

Yeah, gun shows are getting pretty nutty... but I guess I don't have to tell you that!
Nice find on the brass.

I use all three of these bullets in my Mosin, but you can use the two 150 gr. .311 in the 7.62 x 39. Just seat the bullet to 2.200 which will on the Prvi bullet falls right on the crimp groove. Both rds. function great in both my Yugo and Chinese SKS.

I crimp both with the Lee FCD. Just use a light enough crimp on the Speer bullet to where you can just notice the crimp start to show on the brass. I use 24.0 grs RX7 with both these bullets. You might want to also check into the Sierra line of Pro Hunter bullets also the make a 125 and 150 gr. in .311 also.

Thanks for the info res45! Where can I purchase Prvi Partizan bullets? I'm looking for some bullets that I can buy in bulk, Like 1000 rounds or so, Other than the pricey brands.

res45
Graf & Sons is the only place I know of you can buy them, but like most places there out of stock just have to keep a check on them they sell in packs of 100,500 and 1 K.

I have several of those bullets and similar upstairs in the man cave..for the life of me I can't use em in a semi auto of dubious accuracy :laugh_sma ..I just have ta shoot em from a bolt action

Life must be cheaper where you and Pat(Mosinutty) live, cause I can't justify shootin anything other than cast in my AK's and SKS...

Sux to be.....me

Well Swabbie don't feel to bad about it,the Speer bullets were given to me for some work I did on a friends computer. He had a 303 at one time got rid of it some we traded bullets for work,I got three boxes for the work I did. The Prvi bullets I got at Graf a couple years ago, they were cheap back then around $13 per hundred I think there up to around $18 now still not bad compared to other similar bullets.

Just curious why the two 150 gr .311 want shoot good for you,is the bore dia. in your rifles just way to over sized for them to give good accuracy?

swabbie
No it has to do with the bullet designs..for example the 147 gr Sov and others are too tapered, and don't widen out soon enough,

you exceed OAL before you get to the fattest part so that you can crimp them.I have some that will work, but many of them won't...

I'm happy with my cast loads as long as I can get gas checks..I'm waiting for another group buy to begin.

I have a lead source and a lino source as well,so I'll be spending my moolah stocking up on these 2 items
