View Thread: Hungarian Mosin

A friend brought over a couple of Mosins for me to de-cosmo and brighten the bores on. They are both M-44's but one of them looked different to me than the Russian's. Checked out crest on 54r.net and found that it is a Hungarian. It is in excellent condition with a non-lacquered stock. What are these selling for? The Internet search is giving me a range of around $180.00. Is this correct? And if so why are these more desirable than the Russians?

Hungarian Mosin Nagant rifles are less common and if all matching seem to go in the $160 to $200 range. Depends on condition and if original Hungarian sling etc. They were big on marking all parts with the 02. If the stock is 02 marked it is original. You will also note a subtle variation in the Hungarian front sling slot liner is located about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch further to the rear than a Russian or any other type 44 Mosin Nagant. Nice rifles with good fit and finish.

Thanks AK, That's good news! My dad was over at the house last night when my friend brought over the Mosin. We new it was something different because it had no Tula or Izy marks. This is the same guy that found the Russian Tula SKS for me last weekend. My dad called me this morning before he came over to help me do some reloading and said he was going to visit a gun shop by his house before he drove over. The shop usually has several M-44's and 91/30's. He called me back about an hour later all excited and said that he had found a Hungarian for sale on consignment for $98.00! I told him to turn around and drive back to the shop and put it on hold for me! I guess the fellow selling it thinks it is a Russian?
I've really had a lot of luck the past two weeks with falling into good deals! I cleaned my friends Hungarian and his Russian today and the Hungarian has all the marks you've described. It has 02 on every part of the rifle, even the barrel bands and the little band clips. Every piece of the bolt also has 02 stamped on it. I returned the rifles to him today so I don't know if the stock has the sling slot you described but I'm sure it does because it also had the 02 on it as well. I can't wait to see the one dad found for me today, I hope it is all matching! Thanks again AK!

I wish I still had my Hungarian M44. They are nice rifles, and so rarely encountered anymore.

Got my Hungarian today! It looks really good and has a really smooth action compared to the Russians. The bore is in excellent shape, but very dirty, It appears that the rifle has never been apart and cleaned. I will break it down and clean tonight. It also has a homemade leather sling that is pretty unique, although I wish it had the original. I really need some range time!:wink_smal

I know Swabb! And I can't wait! Took the Hungarian apart after work today. Wow! The trigger, Trigger spring, ejector, magazine, and inside of the stock were covered with thick cosmoline. This rifle was definitely being used and shot, maybe even used for a hunting rifle? I would say that the thick cosmoline around the trigger group had to be causing problems, That may be why the gun was being sold on consignment? I guess some folks just don't know better! The dealers clean off the outside of the rifle's and then throw it on the shelf! This could be dangerous! Oh well, she's all clean know and ready for some action. I'll post some pic's when I get a chance. Looks like it is going to be in the upper 40's this weekend, maybe I can hit the range!:D

A buddy called me a while ago to let me know that he visited the shop today over in Kentucky where dad found my Hungarian. He said they had several M91/30's marked down from $100 to $79.00 which is more like they used to be priced. I'm sure dad looked them over when he was there to see if any of them were Tula's, But I would really like to pick one up at that price anyway. I've purchased 2 SKS's and one Mosin in the past 2 week's and really didn't have the money to spend. SOMEBODY STOP ME!!!!!:cry_small

I wish I could tell you to stop, but Mosin Nagants seem to have disappeared from the market at least for the time being. When I see them in retail stores they're always over $100 each. I have about 25 of them, myself, so I don't believe you're being that excessive - except for the spending money you don't have part. My friend it's possible that doing that sort of thing might just make you lose them all in this economic atmosphere what with all the debts from the past eight years coming due. Be careful, but enjoy your guns responsibly, my friend. I've stopped buying guns OR ammo until I have a cool million under investment :clown:

Thanks for the vote of confidence My-rifle, I don't feel so bad now. The mortgage is paid and the fridge is full, maybe I should invest in just one more? If I could only bring myself to re-sale I could make a profit, but that is a difficult barrier to overcome once they are in my possession.:cry_small
