View Thread: What optic if PK-AS is not available?

I know the general consensus is that the PK-AS is the best red dot offered for the AK. My question is, due to the scarcity of these optics right now, which optic would be the runner up to the PK-AS and why? I want an optic that is a 1 pc AK side mount. Any input as always is appreciated.

you might try the PK-A. there are some variations to be aware of. there is an older model and a newer one. the older has an SVD style mount but its been modified to work on any standard ak optics side rail.
the newer comes with either an AK mount or an SVD mount. also available with an optional infrared laser.

the older model has a gray finish.. there are always some of these on ebay.

the newer PK-A has a black finish. these are harder to find.
here is one with an infrared illuminator for use with night vision.

i have the two PK-A models listed here and they are both excellent sights.
they both have their pros and cons.

--older pros:lower mount(more compact), has steel protective waterproof caps over turrets, can use irons when mounted
--older cons: the reticle is not as small as the newer one

--newer pros:higher mount(heads up operation), smaller reticle, target style turrets, can use irons when mounted.
this particular model has a IR laser with pressure switch. excellent with night vision device. but IR is limited on range. it produces about a 2" spot at about 15 yds
--newer cons:not as compact(sits taller)marginal difference but i prefer the lower one, priced higher

then there is always the Kobra sight which comes in a few different mount configurations. these have also become a bit difficult to find.
--i had a Kobra for a while too. regret getting rid of it. my only complaints with the Kobra were that you couldnt use your irons when it was mounted and i was always scared i was gonna tear the rubber sun shroud. Kobra has different reticles to choose from. reticle size is comparable to the newer PK-A model

all three of these sights make it easier for faster target aquisition. all three are tough and hold their zero well. also all three come with various battery power options(camera or watch or AA).

funny thing.. i have or have had all three but for some reason i still prefer my irons. HAHA!

hope this helps

+1 on the kobra and PK-A. Can't go wrong with either.
