View Thread: Five Round SKS Mags
martin08
I picked up a five round internal fit mag for my SKS's that I will be using for hunting next fall. I'm not sure which of the eight options (Russian, 4 Chinese, Romanian, 2 Yugos) I'll be carrying, but I'll have all summer to range test and decide.
Q: Has anyone got experience with these mags, simply stamped "Made in China" on the bottom of the cover?

At one time there was a Chinese SKS rifle,it was called a SKS hunter and it had a 5 rd magazine that fit flush to the stock. Thats probably the magazine that came from it,thats my best guess.

Hunter: Now this was one feature filled offering! It came standard with an ambidextrous safety, windage adjustable rear sight, and sling swivels. The bolt carrier was notched and the front sight hood was removed for a better field of view. A sling swivel was installed on the back rear of the stock and one in the place of the cleaning rod in the front of the stock. Because this is a hunting variant, the magazine capacity was lowered to 5 rounds, making it legal for use in all states.

Good info Res45!
Seems if I can make sure that the five rounder feeds reliably, I probably can live with the rest of the stock items on my SKS's. No need to go whole hog to make it into a "hunter" version. But it is an interesting read on the variant.
Thanks!

Hi martin, I have one of those 5 round Made in China magazines. Never got it to feed more than the first round. I worked on it like it was a Jennings mag but never got it to work worth a darn. You may have better luck. Or maybe you could modify an original mag to 5 rounds.
The original mags are all I will use anymore. They never seem to fail.

Keeping my fingers crossed. I'd really like to have two SKS's all set up and ready to go for hunting next fall. I still have the wooden plug for a backup!

I had a chance to test the mag in one of my Chinese this Sunday. All rounds fed without a hitch!
I only got to run 3 mags full, as there were others waiting at the range, but I'm pleased with the results thus far.

I have been looking all over for one of those fixed 5-round mags. Where do you buy one?

The one pictured came from a local gun show. It was next to an original 10 round mag and I picked them both up for $20! Those deals are few and far between, though.
Another one that I have on the way came from GunBroker

For $20 shipped it's really a good deal, too. I watched many (5 or 6) go by over the past few months on GB that went from $25 - $35 before shipping. I didn't really expect my $15 bid to hold, but it did. I had my maximum bid much higher than that!

Thanks Martin08! I don't get to many gun shows, so I'll be vigilant online at GunBroker.

I think I'd just go with a wooden block in the mag.
Since I live in a state with no mag capacity restrictions for hunting, I just used the stock 10 round mag :D
Heheh, I noticed that I was carrying a full mag, two reloads, a loaded revolver, and two reloads for that. Didn't even think about the wheelgun and the reloads as that is how I always carry it, but 30 rounds of x39 in the woods? Heheh. Good for signaling if I got lost I guess. I always carry at least one reload anyhow.

I have one in my Yugo SKS. It works flawlessly. Same deal for me, I need it to hent with. I bought mine at the gunshop I used to work at. $20 comes to mind.
