View Thread: golani == good first rifle?

I just got my income tax refund and I'm looking to get into rifles for casual competition (300 yards?), and to learn more about them in general. I've done some shooting with my friend's Yugo SKS and it's a blast being at the battle rifle meets and hanging out with the folks there. So I'd like to put a good chunk of my refund into buying something that will last me a while, is reliable, and provides a good opportunity to learn more about rifles in general. From what I've read the Golani looks like a good option. I have a few questions, though:

1.) I've heard the full range of comments about Century, but most of the bad comments are over a year old. Any word on the more recent batch of Golanis?
2.) The majority of comments I've read indicate that mil-spec 5.56 ammo will shoot just fine in this rifle, but most of them are in the "the headspace is the same so it should work fine" and very few of them are "I've dumped x hundreds of 5.56 downrange and it's fine." From first-hand experience will 5.56 work?
3.) I know it's possible to put rails, scope, etc. on these but I haven't seen how to do it other than a side-mount bracket, and I haven't seen any instructions on what to do after that (because I don't think the bracket has any rails on it...could be wrong, though). The bracket in question is at http://www.combathunting.com/Galil-Galil_Scope_Mount_Quick_Lock_Release.html. If that bracket is the only way, what's the next step?

Bunch of n00b questions, I know...but it's hard to find entry-level information. Maybe that means this isn't an entry-level gun?

It's not an entry level gun.

Parts and accessories are hard to find and expensive.

It's far heavier than is necessary.

The jury is still out on the newer receivers, as well.

I have also been wanting one, but from all i read Century is still having a lot of problems! I dont want to gamble on getting a good one!

The new receivers are cast, and are supposed to be a lot better. At $600 from J&G, it is a screaming bargain.

Now if you want to compete, get an AR15, but the Galil is a great buy at this time. You been to the Charlotte military matches?

One in Waxhaw last year - in the summer sometime...ungodly hot. >_<

I'm thinking of holding off - the resounding opinion from a lot of folks from a lot of boards is: "great second rifle, bad first rifle." Plus there's a guy in town with a dozen or so SKS builds in his garage and a mutual friend of ours pointed me towards the SKS paratrooper.

How's that to stir the pot! :D
