Went to a shop I visit from time to time about 1 1/2 Hr's. from the house today and as soon as I walked in I looked towards the rack were they usually have the mil-surps. I've been looking for a Yugo to get for my dad and I saw that they had 5 on the rack! I don't know about the availability of SKS's in your area but they are hard to find around here. I went over to get one for dad thinking they would be priced around $280.00 or so. They wanted $460.00 for them!:uhoh_smal I couldn't believe it! Talk about a mark up! And sure enough a guy walked up and grabbed one like it was a good deal!:rofl_smal
So I called Dad to tell him that the shop owners had lost their minds when he tells me that he had just found a 1966 Russian Tula SKS at a shop in Tennessee on the used rack and bought it for $395.00!:uhoh_smal He said it looked like new! So here I was trying to find him a Yugo and he ends up with the cream of the crop! I'm real happy for him and can't wait to see it. Oh! and the shop that had the Yugo's also had a Norinco SKS for the low low price of $599.00! Unbelievable!

Sweet deal! Oh, it would be 1956 not 66. I have a 1955 Tula, sweet shooter. Did your dad get one with the black bolt?

56, Guess Dad didn't have his spectacles on!:smile_sma The first thing he told me about the gun in comparison to a Norinco was that it had a dark bolt, said it did not look blued but dark in color.
Going to a local show this morning. I'm interested in seeing what the walk around folks are wanting for SKS's, It has really gone crazy! I guess the bore on the Russian's are not chromed?:huh_small

Sounds like your dad got a refurb Russian (laminate or hardwood stock?) at a better price than the local Yugo!
The shop that I bought my Yugo from just last September at $219, is now asking $389. Better to order one from ClassicArms.
All Russians should have the chrome bore. The Yugo is the only model without chrome.
sv_libertarian
Yup, what martin said, a nice refurbed Russian SKS. All Russians should have a chromed bore, mine certainly does.

If I recall correctly, 1951 Russians did not have chrome bores..this process started I think in 1952
A minor point...Nice find by ur Dad Pat :small_gri .I'm lookin for one of those...
Gettin a couple of Nagant pistols for my son and I from my tax refund...next on the list is a Rooskie SKS to go with my 16" cowboy companion
I need another reeloadin and castin project...yeah right :laugh_sma

Yes. Swabbie is right. Not all Russians had the chromed bore.
But those were limited to the '49 and early '50 productions, and some of them were fitted with chromed bores during refurb. I should have said, all '51 and later Russians should have chrome.

Not sure if it is laminate or hardwood, I'll check it out when he get's back home. Nice to know it has a chrome bore. At the local show today I saw about 4 Norinco's all of them over $300.00. One guy had a NIB Norinco paratrooper for $350.00, hell of a deal but I only had $200.00 on me. All I found to take home was a bag of 100 7.62x39 boxer cases for $30.00, not bad being that all the web sights are sold out! One guy had a Mosin M91 Tula with a PU scope for $1000.00 Doubt it was a genuine article. Wolf 7.62x39 going for $8.00 per box!
After the show we went to a gun shop down the road from the house. He had one Yugo SKS and two Romanian SKS's. My friend bought the Yugo for $268.00 and the Romy's were $325.00 each. I told my friend he could drive back to the show and make a quick $50.00 on the Yugo but he decided to keep it. All AK's at the show were selling for $800.00 or more! Crazy times these day's!

Do any of you guy's have pic's of laminate and hardwood SKS stocks? My dad wants to know how you can tell the difference? He also asked about the locations of the cross bolts in the stocks and are they located in different areas depending on the type of wood the stock is made of. Thanks!

The best SKS forum, bar none!

Easiest way to tell the dif, look at the top of the stock. If it is laminate you will see different layers of wood. If it is hardwood it will look like a single piece of wood.
Firefly
The laminate stock will look gorgeous also.
