View Thread: Yugo and Romy compatibility
Murgatroyd
Hey, I'm trying start on an accuracy build using RPK parts as my base. I have found some good quality Yugo barrels, but can't find and Yugo front trunnions, gas blocks, and front sight blocks to match. What are the dimensional differences between the Yugo and Romy barrels? Is it possible to modify them to fit parts from the other manufacturer?

Update to my question: how about the bolts, too? Romy, bolt in a Yugo trunnion? I'm just trying to get a sense of my options for this build.

Bolts are similar and interchangeable. Some RPK's have a heavy triangle shaped firing pin but they aren't required. The Yugo trunnion has a longer area under the rear sight block but this may not be required. The Yugo top cover is shorter. The barrel diameters may be similar but they might off enough to throw off just interchanging parts. The rear sight block and top cover should match the trunnion. Yugo with Yugo and Romy with Romy. Otherwise it may not look great.

Here are some Yugo RPK parts. (click the pics for a larger view)

Those are neat pics...where did you find those?
Here's some numbers I found, but apparently the Yugo measurements were hand taken (I don't know the method).
Romy RPK parts - ID
Front sight block: .6100 in. / 15.49 mm
Gas block: .7860 in. / 19.97 mm
Rear sight block: .8860 in. / 22.46 mm
Trunnion: .9010 in. / 22.90 mm
Yugo M72 RPK barrel
Front sight area - .593" / 15.07mm
Gas block area - .809" / 20.55mm
Rear sight area - .968" / 24.59mm
Trunnion area - .905" / 23.00mm
The trunnions might work and the gas block and front sight could be made to work pretty easily. The biggest issue seems to be the rear sight block. Does the rear sight block face on the Yugo actually bulge out? That seems a little strange...

It might be a larger diameter at the rear sight block than the trunnion. Look at the pics. (d) is the pressed barrel. The threaded barrel has a shoulder and a step down but the pressed barrel looks to be a larger diameter in front of the trunnion. The 308 Saiga barrel is also a larger diameter at the rear sight block than the trunnion.
