View Thread: Help - what finish matches origional S12

Doing my first conversion and would like to know what is the best product to match the origional finish? I have flat and satin Guncote but I'm not sure if the factory finish is ok to bake. Any info is greatly appreciated.
Please don't refer me to Saiga.com - ask there got no response. Questioned the info one of their "Experts" posted and was flamed - F them! I've built enough AK's not to need any info from them. Sound like I'm pissed - yeah your right - F'in idiots that can't even read the regs!!!!! Should have just ask here where the members are helpful and not condescending.
Thanks,
ETG

Here`s a little info ETG, just finished conversion myself & thinkin` about the same thing. +1 on the Saiga12 forumns, there`s some good members there but more than the normal amount of elitists w/ no time for "stupid questions" . Usually I`ll just glean what info I can through searches & get out of there. http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21749&highlight=finish

Where do you get the duracoat high temp? Is it at an auto store, home depot or ????? I have only used GunKote.

Found this on a quick search, may be cheaper sources though(Midway or Brownells?). I`ve never done a metal refinish so I`m taking my time. The little I`ve heard of Gunkote is that it`s a more durable finish but is harder to work with. My Lancaster is Gunkote over parkerize & looks great. Not sure about doing either over paint at high temp., have to wait for the pros to answer that one. http://www.houtsenterprises.net/dur_info.html

After reading a little more from the source I quoted I`m thinking I may go that way, since I`m not set up w/ an oven to bake, unless I hear any cons against it. Here`s the tech. help # they listed/ 1-800-830-6677. Still not sure about Duracoat over paint, have to give `em a call. - edit to add Saiga12 info http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=27907&hl=duracoat

OK, got impatient and went ahead. I used 2/3 Guncote Black Satin and 1/3 Black gloss and thinned just a tad. Very pleased - matched good enough you can't see any difference once the trigger guard is installed. The factory finish took the 325 degrees for an hour and 45 min with no problems.
