View Thread: Saiga furniture on an AK

What has to be done to get a saiga handguard to fit onto an AK47...specifically a Romy? I've never seen or held a saiga before. I like the look of the front handguard and would like to install one on a build I'm doing. Any pointers?

Any pointers?Saiga handguards are attached by a screw in the bottom front of the receiver that isn't present on other receivers. Also, I believe that the bayonet lug on the gas block would need to be removed in order to properly seat the handguard. I'll be able to tell you more once my new Saiga gets here; I've only handled one briefly.

Either that, or the handguard could be slotted for the bayo lug.Yeah I thought about that after the fact. I haven't taken a Saiga handguard off yet so I didn't know what to expect in the belly of the beast that could prevent someone from doing that. But yeah, slotting the handguard would be the most sensible approach.

The front of the Saiga handguard is held by a longer cross pin through the gas block. The rear is held by a screw through the receiver and there was another variation without a screw on the early ones. The gas block cross pins may be in slightly locations on the barrel due to the vertical gas block on the Saiga and an angled gas block on the Romanian AK.

I've seen a lot of Saigas, and never seen one with a cross pin holding the front.
All the ones I've seen have a screw fore and aft.

Most of them only have a screw in the front for the sling swivel post. Usually the front slides on an extended gas block cross pin and is retained by one screw at the rear in the receiver. There have been a few variations but this seems to be the most common.
