View Thread: Saiga 223 & Norinco/Polytech Hunter 7.62

I'm new to this forum and to AK's, which will probably be obvious from my questions. I just purchased a new Saiga 223 and an older Nor/Poly(386). I'm now trying to keep from violating 922r.
I ordered a Skeleton stock from RAA for the Saiga and they assured me it was legal to mount. But reading here has gotten me worried about mounting it.
Is it legal? Also, I have several US 30 round Saiga mags. Can I use them without going foul of 922r??
With the Hunter I also got several Bulg/30 round mags. They work with no modifications. Are they legal with the Hunter without US parts?
This maybe answered here but I haven't been able to decifer the information, or am I missing it entirely?
Thanks in advance.

If the stock is the Saiga thumbhole stock, that should alright as it was approved for import. Magazines over 10 rounds are not.

It's not the thumb hole stock, it is the Dragonov style, called Skeleton by RAA.

The mag issue seems very strange. I thought the Hi Cap. mag ban got lifted. They can sell mags made for the model rifle but it is illegal to use it? What's up with that?

That's the approved Saiga thumbhole stock. On the 223 and 7.62x39 Saiga's the trigger can be pretty bad or go bad with all of the cross pins and connectors. Those are usually best converted to standard pistol grips. The 308 Saiga can use that stock and the original trigger to good use. The 223 and 7.62x39 require the weird trigger because the magwell wiil take a high cap military magazine even the the small parts like the mag lever and bullet guide are different. There is no 308 military magazine that will fit the 308 model.

The skeleton Saiga stock has the pistol grip behind the receiver, not under it.
You're fine.

Great! I'm fine with the Saiga rear stock, so I don't need to do a conversion to get a piston grip. What about the front plastic? I wouldn't think changing it would violate anything but I guess I should ask??
Now about the Mags with more than 10 rounds. I've had two different dealers tell me this week that they didn't know of any problems with using them. Of course they also sell mags along with Saigas. So do I trust them?
Question from my first post about the Polytech/Norinco Hunter-"With the Hunter I also got several Bulg/30 round mags. They work with no modifications. Are they legal with the Hunter without US parts and no mods?" Anyone know? or is there somewhere I could find out?
Thanks for all the help.

The rifle is not importable with magazines larger than 10 rounds. That is the standard for what is legal. For the handguard you'll need one with front clamp for a Saiga as the Saiga doesn't have an AK handguard retainer and the gas tube is different but that's easy to change. The original Saiga magazines are decent but usually require slight fitting. They are designed to have the plastic trimmed a bit.
