View Thread: Yugo 59/66

Picked up a 59/66 yesterday. Any of you guys know if the bore diameter is the same as a Chicom? .311?

swabbie
they all pretty much start out at 310..hundreds of years ago :laugh_sma

slug it if you want to be sure, but most SKS's haven't been shot out before we get them ,unlike the Mosins.

that Lee 312 boolit will do mighty fine, and may smooth out the bore a lil as well

mosinutty
Thanks Swabb, I haven't had a chance to de-cosmo it yet. The yugo seems to be a lot heavier than the Norinco. I'm looking forward to taking it to the range and see how it performs next to the Chicom. I think I'm going to install a Tapco fusion stock on it, not sure yet. I guess I'm old fashion, but I like the original wood stocks better than anything.

Ordered an OD green Tapco stock and 20 round OD green mag today for the Yugo SKS. Had a hard time finding the mag, had to search around a bit. I'll post pic's when I get it all together now that I finally have high speed Internet. Had to go with Hughes Net. because I'm isolated out in the sticks. I'll never use dial up again! Yipeeeee!:tongue_sm

I am thinking of getting a SKS. Are 20 and larger pre-ban mags available? Being in NY I would be limited to a pre-ban mag. I was not sure if the larger mags I have been seeing are something new or not. Thanks.

mosinutty
Tapco makes a new 10 and 20 round poly mag that function well. In your area you would have to go with the 10 rounder that looks like a high cap but is not.

NY here too.

Get one and leave the fixed box mag.

No offense to anyone but I've never seen a moded one that was worth a shit.

They all had feed probs and werent worth the trouble.

Keep it factory.

I here ya Black-Wolf. I've seen some real shitty hi-caps for the SKS. I've got an old 30 rounder I've had for years that has never....never failed to feed. No manufacture mark of any kind, and have never seen another like it.
I recently bought a Tapco 20 rounder and have shot exactly 60 rounds through it so far with no failures or feed issues of any kind. I ordered another yesterday in OD green to match my new stock. When you install an after market mag you can instantly tell if it is a good fit or not. The Tapco's snap in tight and lock the bolt back perfectly. I'm sold on them thus far and anxious to see how many rounds I can put through one before I experience problems. Time will tell!

Thats good to hear Mosin.

Maybe they've worked the design and dimension bugs out of them thru the years.

Continued good luck to you :cool_smal

Received my OD green Tapco Fusion stock today. I was afraid I wouldn't get it because of the ice storm we are having, but the UPS guy left it with a lady at the end of my road for me to pick up. He got stuck in the snow in my drive last year and had to get a tow! Going to install this weekend, then I'll post pic's.:D

sometimes I wish that I live out in the country, and then posts like yours remind me why i don't :laugh_sma :laugh_sma

I suspect I'll be movin somewheres like that when my better half can retire(7 years)

I'm leavin my Norinco bone stock(well except for the Chinese 20 rounder and the hi-tech sights) :laugh_sma :laugh_sma .No really..other than that it's stayin bone stock..well maybe a trip to Kivaari for the trigger assy

other than that I'm not touchin it..bone stock i swear :D

Wow Swabb! Just got my power back on and I'm amazed, I was really freaking out Tue. night when it hit. I stood out on my deck and trees were falling all around the house. Sounded like a war...non stop! Luckily found a generator for rent Wed. AM. Cut 30 trees and tops blocking the road out to the main road to get to town. Started at 6 AM and quit cutting at 2 PM. Shitty drive to town for the generator. Then back home to set up and cut some of my neighbors out. Up in the dark this AM to go to work. Then by pure luck my girlfriend called me on the way home from work and said the power was back on, I don't know how with all the damage! Expecting wind Fri. so it will be bad and will loose electric again for sure!
Oh well, Hope it stays on long enough to convert my Yugo over. When I got home tonight I worked on my Mak-90. Removed my thumb hole and installed a pistol grip and stock. I bought the Yugo just for converting and am going to keep the new norinco stock in the box. Crossing my fingers the lights stay on, but if they don't I'm ready, 2 generators all gassed up!;)

swabbie
I reeely like those on my Norinco...gonna put a similar set on my M44..my aging eyes just don't like the notch and post anymore :mad_small

glad ur power's back on..hope it stays that way

I've been rust bluing my 2 receivers..I'm up to the 5th rusting..now I've got a head cold :mad_small ..grrr

Still no molds from Lee..I'm gonna call em Monday if I don't get them...this started in late June for pete's sake

Now please correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you have to play the 922(r) game if you put a Yugo in a T-6 stock?

martin08
You are correct, Sv_

Then you get into the "10 or more" most confusing (or annoying) game of which I prefer to stay out....

Parts is parts is parts is parts is.....

(1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings, or castings.
(2) Barrels.
(3) Barrel extensions.
(4) Mounting blocks (trunnions).
(5) Muzzle attachments.
(6) Bolts.
(7) Bolt carriers.
(8) Operating rods.
(9) Gas pistons.
(10) Trigger housings.
(11) Triggers.
(12) Hammers.
(13) Sears.
(14) Disconnectors.
(15) Buttstocks.
(16) Pistol grips.
(17) Forearms, handguards.
(18) Magazine bodies.
(19) Followers.
(20) Floor plates.

Now choose ten of the tewnty, or is it seventeen or fourteen??? And are they US made or foreign, and which parts count as two or three? And is it legal in Tennesee but not California? Why is the Yugo a C&R and it's not fifty years old but my '56 Sino-Soviet isn't C&R?????? ... and so on and on.... (I have my Smilies disabled!)

It's nicer (and less frantic!) to have them stock!

But many will choose to differ, I'm sure.

Nice lookin Gun, Mosinutty.

mosinutty
Thanks martin, I really like the Tapco stocks, they are the best after market stocks I have found yet for the SKS.

Firefly
I also like the Tapco mag you got on there too. Tough looking rifle

.

Which is why I enjoy my verifiable pre 1989 Russian SKS. I don't have to play silly games! WooHoo!

BTW, your Sino-Soviet should be automatically C&R once it hits the 50 year old stage. If not a letter to ATF asking for a clarification will probably result in it being added to the list.

mosinutty
I've mounted a cheap BSA red dot on the hand guard rail. From the generic bore sighting I did (Looking through the bore aimed at the top of a fence post through the fogged up glass on my patio doors then adjusting the red dot) It appears that I will not have enough down adjustment on the elevation. And I can't use the open sights which sux! I'll probably remove the red dot and stick with the open sights. Haven't had a chance to go to the range yet. I'm going to load up some more of my Swabbie cast loads before I go and see how accurate it is on paper.

jlm13
Nice looking gun. the 49/56 yugos in exc. cond. have been going for $499. in my area at shows!

mosinutty
When the bubble burst, If it ever does, I wonder if prices will fall again on the mil-surps or remain the same? Historically the price of guns has always increased. What a shame. You know now that I think about it this may have been the new administrations plan all along. Maybe they posed the question to some analyst before the election " Are American citizens gullible enough to believe that firearms will be banned by the new administration which will in turn cause a buying frenzy which will have an end result of unobtainable high priced ammo and firearms to the average citizen?" Conspiracy theories are a wonderful thing!:small_gri
