View Thread: Non-threaded compensator

Has anyone put a traditional AK comp on a Sporter barrel? I've looked at mine and it appears that the front sight post also has a 'barrel shroud' for lack of a better term that extends up to the muzzle. I'm guessing that the whole thing can be removed and replaced with a new post that has an integrated compensator?

If it's a 223 or 7.62x39 you should be able to replace it with an AK74 front sight block. This is a threaded model with 24mm threads. The 308 is completely different. The early 223's were 1mm diameter later but the newer ones may be standard diameter. The front sight block does include a cover over the front part. Some people have cut away this extension and threaded the barrel and even drilled the original front sight block for a plunger retainer.

The one I have is a 7.62x39. I was interested in finding anything that wouldn't involving threading the barrel. The guy who helped me convert it back to an AK configuration, who's also a retired tool & die guy, remarked that it would be difficult to thread the barrel.
Wouldn't you literally have to remove the barrel from the receiver and chuck it up in a lathe in order to thread it? Or, am I totally off base here.

There are tools to thread the barrel but you could instead remove the front sight base and replace it with a threaded AK74 front sight base.

Pardon if I sound dumb - are you saying that a threaded AK74 front sight base requires no threading of the existing barrel?

The AK74 front sight base fits on the end of the barrel with a couple of pins. The end of the AK74 front sight base itself is threaded, so you can attach a muzzle device.

see, instead of the barrel, its the tip of the sight base is threaded. That's why it uses bigger threads too; a standard 14LH AK-47 muzzle device won't fit, but most any ak-74 one will.

The AK74 front sight base is a press fit on the barrel and pinned exactly like the Saiga front sight base. (as long as it's 7.62x39 or 223) The threads are on the sight base not the barrel.

Great, thanks for the info!

DPH makes a slip on cominsator with threads that connect to the front site. I picked one up at the funshow today. Looks like it will take about 30sec. to put on. Nice looking too. I'll try to post pics of it installed tomorrow.
