View Thread: Do Galil's use Ak fire control group?

B.A.R Boy
dumb question, but every where I look for a New US made galil fire group it sends be to ak parts. Are the interchangeable? Whats the best group out there? G2?

mustang67
Yes the AK fire group will work. You have to use an AK trigger spring too. Hope this helps

That answers it, Thanks

gunplumber
They are not the same, but AK can be used.

The Galil uses a separate trigger spring, independent of the hammer spring.

I show on my galil build tutorials (under notes on my website) how to use the original spring, but most people don't want to be bothered and just use the AK FCG

B.A.R Boy
Any disadvantage to ak parts?

After reading your notes,
(Man, need to get me one of these 20ton presses.)

gunplumber
not that I can see.

you're going to have a lot more trouble with that piece-of-shit receiver than installing a FCG.

B.A.R Boy
rapidfire receivers are junk? I have head only praise about them. I there a company you like better?

gunplumber
probably on those websites that get a kickback from vendors to delete any negative press.

The only current manufacture US made galil receiver is the ORF. It has a LONG history of defects in materials and workmanship, particularly in the critical dimensions of the locking recesses and the insufficient heat treat. Even the facility that ORF (Todd Grove) agreed to use for hardness testing, came back with the "too soft" condemnation.

Please see my detailed review on my website under notes.

Who knows, maybe you will be lucky and after putting a large chunk of change into the project you won't get mushroomed locking surfaces and growing headspace as so many of ORF's victims have.

illlllllllllllllllll, thanks for the head up/

GP, I see that Caspian seems to be making cast receivers for the Golani now. I am assuming that you have not seen these yet. I don;t know how good they are. The problem I see is that the builds are still from the trolls @ Century.

gunplumber
I would like to see one of those - caspian certainly has a good reputation, unlike ORF.

We've had a couple of the new receivers come through the shop recently upon which we've built a couple of rifles...

They seem to be pretty good, but they aren't as pretty as the ORF ones were in terms of the outside finish. Too bad so many other fatal things are wrong with the ORF ones...

I was thinking Thompson for the new receivers, but they could be Caspian...

If I could get ahold of one of the new receivers for myself, I'd probably build up a Galil on it for myself...:)

Century does say "Caspian" is now making their Galil receivers but I don't know if this is the same Caspian of 1911 fame but it may be as that company is located near one of Century's locations. I think they did do something else for Century a while ago too.
