View Thread: Gun storage

mosinutty
With my recent interest in Mosin's I have guns under the bed, In the corners, under the stairs. My cheap Stackon gun locker is full. What do you guys do for storage? I can't afford a big fancy gun safe for now, so I'm thinking about what I might do to get my mil-surps organized and out of sight from would be thieves? I live on a dead end gravel road in the sticks with neighbors that watch out for one another, But I still feel uneasy leaving the homestead with guns out that can be easily grabbed. I know that what ever you do if a thief wants your stuff they will get to it, but I would like to do something to slow them down.

I had an idea this morning about using the walk in furnace room. It is unfinished, No dry wall, With the studs exposed. I thought about getting some large rubberized hanging hooks and hang the rifles from stud to stud with them in their gun socks for dust protection. The door to the room could be locked with a small padlock. It would be easy to break into the room, But it would be more of a deterrence than I have now. What do you guys think?

before i got my safe i up-armored a hall closet. six panel solid core door with 3/4" plywood screwed to the inside. welded hinge pins, 3" screws in the hinges and striker plates, keyed entry lock and deadbolt. you could get in with an axe but time is something a thief doesn't like to expend. i have a gun cabinet with wall hangers and air guns in it to distract any potential crooks. fireing pins or bolts have been removed.

i have a small 8' x 8' space that i installed the stack on safes in.
first i put 5/8" sheetrock on the studs, then a layer of 1/2" square hardware cloth. (i bought a roll of it 4' x 100' long). then another layer of 5/8' sheetrock. then i built a platform(stand) to stand the safes on ( keeps them off the floor). put the safes on top of the stand AND BOLTED THEM TO THE WALL. i then bolted the safes together on the side. i then bought me a steel exterior door and installed a key lock and a dead bolt lock on it. so far so good. most people don't know it has safes in in unless i tell them.
oh! i have some big dogs in the house also. i have an alarm on the door that is very loud. ( i forget to turn it off sometimes).
i store ammo under the stand (on the floor).

Wal-Mart has small steel Sentry cabinet for like a hunnert bucks. Might put one or two in the space you mention, then lock up the room itself.

sounds like you've got the space you need right there.

be on the lookout for a reely sturdy steel door and frame which will fit

wire it for a dehumidifier and heavy plywood on the inner walls...maybe look for some damaged sheets?

previous posters are correct..make it not worth the crook's time

somebody in SGN sells a tear gas release system if you need one :rofl_smal

my alarm/deterrent is named Max..all 110 lbs of him :small_gri :small_gri

Tear Gas? Just put a pump on a 20 gallon drum of gasoline and pipe it into your
sprinkler system. Let's see em get away from that one.

Well all I need now is a good steel door. I went ahead with the bicycle hooks. I went to Wally world and picked up 22 rubberized lag bolt hooks, Two 5/16 eye bolts, a 6 ft. rubberized steel choker, and a couple of pad locks. I installed the hooks into the studs of the closet on the right hand side when you walk in. I had to hang the Mosin's pretty close to one another to have enough room. Below them my SKS and then vertically below them my M-91 sniper and two Mausers. I then drilled through the studs and installed an eye bolt at the top and bottom of the trigger guard side of the rifles. When I'm going to be away from home I'll lay the guns on their sides in the hangers and run the choker through the trigger guards then pad lock each end of the choker to the eye bolts. And being that I am so anal I typed up identification tags for each rifle and Elmer glued them to the stud next to each rifle, also hung some bayos and set some ammo cans below the mounts. My girlfriend and daughter looked at me and said "Well, you've finally lost your mind!" I said yeah, But ain't it cool! Now I just need a better door for the closet.

I have a Stackon cheapo b/c I don't have the money or ability to buy/move a real safe every year or two into apartments. I lined the inside walls with chickenwire and then thin quik-concrete. then put about three inches in the floor section. no one man operation could carry the thing out and a two man crew better be able to run at least 1000 ft. per second!
Good ideas everyone has. Some day I'll have a mancave locked down and secured to the max....until then...

Being a remodeling contractor, I have some interesting ideas for gun security. I'm not about to post them on the internet, but I would suggest: those plastic gunbags sold by CTD and others, sealed with the packets of moisture absorbing chemicals then stored in your cache. A lot of oil, perhaps cosmoline to preserve the steel. Not easily accessed, but impossible to find. A little deer scent sprayed will prevent the dogs from smelling the gunpowder if the Obomination boys deside to visit.
8" pvc with screw endcaps and glued, then midnight gardening can also protect a cache. Put a small goldfish pond over the site and the dogs won't be able to smell those out either.

Good idea's! I've been contemplating putting some weapons under ground. But I hate the fact that us as free Americans should ever have to. But if I wait to see what Osamabama does the men in black may show up early for the tea party!
