View Thread: Mosin muzzle break.

Stupid mistake. I recently purchased another Izy M-38 and decided to dress it up a little, But I didn't want to get the mall ninga look. I went to a web-sight called Daves collectibles and purchased a thumb screw muzzle break and a moss butt recoil pad. I also took a bent bolt I had purchased from Numrich and flattend the ball on the underside for a better grip, Like the yugo mauser has. The gun really looks good, Not mall ninga at all. The muzzle break has a hinged hood that flips behind the rear sight and then a large thumb screw to tighten it down. When I installed it I noticed about a 1/4 inch gap between the hood and the front sight with the muzzle break mounted fully against the muzzle. When I went to the range and fired the first shot I noticed the muzzle break was now pitching upward. After inspection I found the hood and pin were wiped out, Bent beyond repair? What happend, When the gun fired the muzzle blast propeld the break forward and up the front sight base which in turn wiped it out. I couldn't stand it and had to purchase another one, this time mounted firmly against the front sight base! Will test out this weekend. So if you buy one...Mount it against the rear of the sight base. The moss butt pad looks really good, uses existing butt plate screws, and performs well. If you see a little light between the upper part of the pad and the wood stock, fill the gap with black silicone and smooth out.:sidegrin_

I'd like to make fun of ya,but I tried the same trick with an old SKS years ago.
mine was held on with a brass pin.My son named it the "launch o matic" :rofl_smal

I gave up..I am gonna try one of those butt pads for my M44

Just thread it 14 mm reverse thread, and put a 74 style brake on it.Use an oil pan plug copper washer, sand down to index the brake to 12 o'clock. They really cut down the recoil. They also don't fall off.

mosinutty
RG: were can I find a 14 mm left hand thread die? You think this is something I could pick up at a tool and die supplier? I threaded a friends AK for a muzzle break and he gave me the die and die handle, but I think it is standard right hand thread.

swabbie
Mosin..it should be written or engraved(poorly probably) on the die itself. If you used it for the AK,it's probably 14.0x1LH...

mosinutty
Thanks Swabb, I'll dig it out today and take a look. If the rain will quit this morning I think I'll visit the range and try out the M-38, see if it will stay on. I will try and post some pic's shortly.

I got a die and guide thru Brownell's.
I would think any of the brakes on the market would look pretty good on a mosin. The AMD would look pretty mean on it.

mosinutty
Thank's RG. The die and guide my friend gave me has these markings on it. tmx. the brand I guess and V2-28 UNEF SSH? I can't remember what size thread the muzzle break was that he mounted on his AK, I'll see if he remembers. I couldn't visit the range yesterday, bad weather, I'm going this morning to test out the muzzle break. I was goinig to post some pic's of my M-38 but living out here in the sticks with dial up wont allow me to. To download the pic's to photo bucket takes forever! Hoping to get high speed in a few month's when I can save up the $400.00 set up fee.:sad_small

swabbie
Mosin..that sounds like 500-28,which I think is what most AR 15's are threaded

Gunplumber has used this on some builds and Brownell's has a buttload of muzzle brakes threaded that size.

I think you can rent the dies and TAT from some folks if you don't want to buy them

mosinutty
I believe your right Swabb, Now that I think about it my friend installed a muzzle break on his AK after we threaded it that had the same thread patern as an AR-15. I went to the range today to test the muzzle break. After the first shot I inspected the compensator and found that the muzzle blast had damaged the hinged hood just like the other one. Not as bad, But it definitely bent the roll pins.:mad_small Iv'e decided to leave it be. The main reason I tried it was for a venture dad and I have been working on. We are going to set up at some of the local shows and offer the service of re-finishing Mosin's, I thought that style of muzzle break would be appealing to some folks. I guess if the Russians went without them, I'll do the same.:smile_sma I did make some really good shots with my M-38 after throwing the muzzle break in the woods. Set up at 50 yards shooting from my heavy homemade rifle rest. Out of 5 rounds, 3 in the 10 ring, one in the x ring, and one in the 6 ring that was my first shot with the muzzle break.:small_gri

The muzzle break you speak of is probably like the one I've got. It is actually made to fit the later years M44 (I think '46 and later) whose barrel is a few thousandths larger than the M38 or earlier years m44. I've heard of folks actually breaking their front sights off with them.

If you're gonna use it on an m38, cut a shim from an aluminum soda can and wrap around the barrel under the clamp. Make sure it's seated up against the front sight and tighten firmly. Use pliers or screwdriver to tighten as much as you dare without stripping threads. Make sure the two halves of the clamp are not coming all the way together when tightened. If they are, insert another layer of shim until they don't.

Mine works really well, reducing the felt recoil to slightly more than a .22 would be. It will also clear anything and everything off the benches for several feet to either side. Don't use it at a busy range with folks shooting beside you or someone may try to wrap your barrel around your neck.

swabbie
sounds like good advice from Gnarly..now go bact to the woods and get it back !!!

swore I wouldn't put one on my M44,but after I install the new sights, who knows?

I've pimped out pretty much everything I own(but subtly) :laugh_sma

1) BRAVO for correct usage of "break" in your thread title. Screw-on Mosin muzzle brakes make excellent close range secondary projectiles. A little research would confirm this for you.

2) You've already damaged your front sight, and now you're gonna go for a totally clean tube? These screw on Mosin muzzle brakes are trash. Do as suggested and thread your barrel and use a real muzzle brake.

3) If you do 'test it out', get video.

mosinutty
I think I'll leave it alone fellas, The Russkies designed the Mosin to be muzzle brakeless, Perhaps I should give it up. But man it did look really cool. I may try to thread the barrel, But this would render the rifle unauthentic.:sad_small I went to one web sight, The Mosin Nagant forums, Those guy's get real shitty about any modification's what so ever, even a stock refinish. They would wana beat me down!:laugh_sma

I've got a MB on my 1947 M44 and it seems pretty tight. I had to rubber mallet the thing to get it on. it has a fitting that screws down behind the front sight. I got it as a gift so I don't know how much it costs, it was a gift but I think they sell it on tick bite. Haven't hot it yet so I hope it stays on.

mosinutty
Tick bite has 2 variations of the muzzle break, I believe the one you have is the AK-47 style with the double screw hood. I would think by the looks of it that it will have a better chance of hanging on than the the thumb screw hood I tested. Dave's Collectibles did reimburse me for the purchase of the muzzle break, I had to send it back to them with all paperwork and receipt. Let us know how it goes! I think the one I had may have worked if I had used some of my re-loads other than the mil-surp cartridges. The mil-surp ammo produces one hell of a muzzle blast as compared to my re-loads.

Enscribe
I put it on to maybe counter the blinding flash I see through the scope when firing. I'll definitely report back.

mosinutty
I visited David's Collectibles (tick bite supply) on line store today and noticed that the muzzle break I had trouble with is no longer being offered there. Must have got more complaints along with mine. They are a stand up group of folks! I will continue to do future business with them.;)

This is what I did on my M-44. I also cut off the bayonet lug and sanded it down to match the contour of the barrel. With the 74 style brake it looks like it belongs on the gun. It actually kicks less than my full length Mosin. I find with ammo still cheap I shoot the M-44 more than any other centerfire I have.
:small_gri And if someone is next to me at the range they move down a bench or two. :skull: :rofl_smal

mosinutty
The M-38 I want to put the compensator on does not, of course, have a bayo lug. I wonder how much of the barrel I would have to thread. I mean I wonder if there is enough in front of the sight?
