View Thread: Round or hex

Really is there any difference in accuracy? Value? Just wondering what the "experts" think.

Round receivers were made to speed up production. The hex receivers are a little more desirable but don't go for all that much more than a round receiver. The hex receiver is also stronger than the round receiver. This website has all kinds of info about Mosins www.7.62x54r.net

most Mosins whether they are hex or round are now only capable of approx 4 MOA accuracy unless you are shooting oversize cast ammo or they are Finns or something with a non worn out bore.
think MOPP(minute of pie plate) with milsurp full power ammo :rofl_smal
these bores started life at "three lines"...310 diameter many many years ago.
most slug .315 now anything less is a plus.

mosin factory spec was 3 out of 5 touching at 100 yards, anything that wouldnt do it was put back in the line to be reworked.
of course this was pre war, during the war they just put them out as fast as possible, no concern with accuracy, just with production numbers.
the Round receiver models didn't begin until 1935 Izshvek and 1936 for Tula so any hex receiver gun unless it was rearsenaled is pre war. built to armoury standards.
most of the guns you will find will be round receiver 91/30s rearsenaled. 75% will be counter bored with fair to poor bores by american standards.
my best mosin came from pat burns http://www.gunsnammo.com/

If you're looking for a gun to shoot, it doesn't make a difference.
If you're looking at owning a "collectable" then hex receivers are considered more desirable.

Some Hex receivers were actually made in the USA! by Westinghouse.
mosinutty
At Knob creek this year I saw two Westinghouse m-91/30's and one Asian mosin. I can't remember if it was Chinese or Japanese. I didn't know there were any Asian makes of the mosin.

China started their own version of the M44 in 1953 and production ended around 1961.The Chinese were also supplied with M1891's during the 1920s thru 1950s .Probably bought from Russia and they put their own markings on it.
