View Thread: Will the SVD ever be legally imported again?

Subject says it all. I have an older/originally imported Romak 3 with the real military illuminated scope which is great, but I really have my eye on the SVD. It's not fair that people in can just pick these up with such ease.
Will they every be imported again? What laws / bans would have to be repealed or sunset for this to happen?
Thanks-
roamk3_noob
Also- could these be imported from somewhere else in the world into the USA to an FFL dealer?

No it's not the country from where they are imported but the country where they are made that is restricted.

There are a number of named guns that the US agreed not to import from "Russia", Mak's/SVT40's SVT38's/SVD's/ AK47/ AK74...just to name a few..these are a definate no-no....Aztec tried a couple of years ago importing the large remaining SVT40's Century has in Canada...the import went tit's up because of the agreement signed with Soviet Union.
If it was the country of origin, then the saiga's would not have made it in...I can't remember the specific agreement date, but it was in the last 20 years--it's been a while for sure....

Marstar in Canada has a bunch of SVT40's...parts also....pretty cheap in todays world of $800-$1,000 SVT40's...but the guns can not come into the states because of the signed restrictions...

you can forget about SVDs ever being imported, if you want one, dig down really deep in your pocket if one comes up for sale

it's a treaty agreement that was signed between the US and russia. the gist of it was something to effect, if russia wants to keep getting economic considerations, then they agree not to export military style weapons
now if I was russia, I would sign that in a heartbeat as well.........the money they would be getting would be billions times more, then what the small penny annie sales of SVDs would ever be.

Russian rifles are covered by a trade regulation called the VRA (Voluntary Restraint Agreement) whereby Russia agreed not to export certain firearms to the US in exchange for foreign aid back around 1996. The VRA restricts Russia from exporting certain Russian firearms to the US. And the above regulations prohibit those same rifles from being imported into the US.
