How common are new Norinco SKS's in the box? If you find one, what would be a good price?
vz58kid
What type? Thats like asking how much is a new car! What type? VW or Rolls?
mosinutty
vz58: From the phone conversation I had with the fellow that purchased it, it is a 7.62x39 non-paratrooper, wood stock, 10 round fixed mag. And what do they mean by non-removable mag? Can't be removed and replaced with the common 20 or 30 rounders? Please educate my dumb-arss.:laugh_sma

Need to know all info. printed on box, importer, what yr. does it have a bay, blade or spike? Or is bay. lug ground off? Pre-ban or Ban-model, any original
sale papers with it, could be important!
Any Sks can simply have a box mag. replaced with no tool to take a high-cap mag. but 99.9% of these dont work well!
Pictures would be best, but a list of the questions above will be almost as good!
Up until a week ago, depending where you live, a nib Norinco of any any type would have been $300.+. Since the election SKS have gone hiding like most AKs and ARs, but prices on all that has gone up! At this point, if its has a bay. and clean. rod and is nib, i would offer $325. but not over $400.
Please get more info. and keep us posted! Thanks, James

The non removeable mag is called "fixed Mag" which is original to the rifle.(The best magazine for thr SKS)You can remove it by pulling back the charging handle and putting the weapon on safe.Remove bolt ,turn weapon upside down.(You must remove the trigger assembly before removing the fixed mag). Behind the trigger guard there is a catch holding it in place.Depress this catch with the punch that comes with the cleaning kit and pull out the trigger assembly. The mag should come out after. If you are gonna put detatchable mags in then put the trigger assembly in before the mag.Remember you MUST put the safety on when taking out the trigger assembly.

Thanks James & firefly! I am familliar with the 10 round box to 20 and 30 round conversion, have a couple. What threw me off was my buddy told me that with the one he purchased the manual stated non-removable. He is bringing it home next week, purchased out of town, and I will check it out and get back with ya. The reason all this sparked my interest is that he paid $199.00 for it, NIB coverd with cosmoline and the shop owner said he has many more! I said "Dude...go back now and buy all the fu*!#rs he has!" :uhoh_smal Of course he only had enough cash for one. He said the stamping on the receiver is from an importer in California.

Had a chance to check out the rifle, field strip, and de-cosmoline. It is the real deal, Norinco new in box with all the old goodies except for the spike bayo. I don't understand where in the hell this guy is getting them, but we are going to make a trip after thanksgiving, aprox. 15 hours round trip, and pick up 5 or more. He called the shop to ask the guy if he had more, he said he has plenty and the price has gone up to $250.00, which is still an awsome price. I will post some pic's when I get mine.:smile_sma

If they come with the bayonet (pre-1989) I'd like to buy some too - all of them as a matter of fact. If you work it so he'll ship them, I'll save you a 15 hour drive and ship yours to you at same price with no shipping fee and you'd also save the sales tax, gas and 15 hours time. (although you'd have an FFL transfer fee from your dealer)

The one my Dad purchased had everything except the bayo. How can I tell if they are pre-89? I don't understand how he has and can get new ones? Norinco can not import these anymore can they, or am I wrong?
gunplumber
if it doesn't have the bayonet, its a post ban and is subject to 922/US parts to add a bayonet.
They were $79 20 years ago and he probably bought a copuple crates. I would have if I had that kind of money then. unfortunately, I was living in a one bedroom apartment in the ghetto with a workbench in my kitchen, so I couldn't buy many of the things I wanted to.
Now that I can - they are long gone.

The rifle does have the bayo lug, but I can't remember if it was threaded or not. Dad is out of town, so I can't look at it right away. The importer stamp said Ontario California.
gunplumber
bayonet lug? threaded? SKSs have a [pivot point with a hole in it. The bayonet has a spring loaded handle. Is slides over this pivot point and is retained by a screw. pulling tha hndle disengages the bayonet and lets it swing out and lock or under the handguard and lock. there is no threading.
Since the bayonet was the only thing that would prevent a post-1989 rifle from being imported as "not an assault rifle," if the bayonet is removed, and its a NIW gun, chances are its post-1989 and it would be illegal to install the bayonet with out adding a bunch of ugly US parts.
Ontario? RAI, Fed Ord, maybe a few others. there were several in ontario in the 80s.

I'm not sure 922R applies, as they don't have detachable magazines. It was more to do with the EO ban than USC.
A friend bought one around '90 or '91, it came with the bayonet loose in the box. He installed it, primarily to retain the cleaning rod!

it does.

Gunplumber: Are these fairly common to find today NIB? and are they worth the $250.00?
ACMcom
It's not common to find any Chinese rifle NIB. They haven't been imported for years.
If I didn't already have one with a bayonet, I'd buy one for $250.
gunplumber
A true pre-89, I'd buy as many as I could find at $250. A post '89, perhaps with a non matching bayonet, I'd have to think hard about how much I care for 922, and whether anyone else does.
Doesn't make the gun shoot any better - the lack of bayonet, but I collect them because I like them in their correct lines.
I have three I've aquired recently, and paid $200, $250, and $300 for respectively, all new chinese.
Omega Weapons had some new paras, but I never cared for them.

I love gunplumbers responses. I too was young and in the poorhouse back then. Its nice to know I didnt suffer alone. I think what he meant by the "threading" was the recieving side of the bayonet lug that the retaining screw actually threads into. Some during that time were actually drilled out so as not to accomodate a bayonet holding screw at all. I recently bought several norinco type 56 sks for 200 a piece. They are beautiful and heavy with cosmo but never shot. $250 in the box is fair, but after all the panic buying is over I think 300 might be kind of high. Be mindful that big brother makes a big deal out of "unlicensed dealers" before you go too crazy with them. My 2 cents.
mosinutty
Thanks for the information guy's. Looks like we will be heading south on 12/15 to pick up 4 of them, one each for friend's and ourselves. So if I add a bayonet after purchase this would render the weapon illegal?
gunplumber

It would probably be manufacturing an assault weapon, banned from import, in violation of 18 USC section 922R.

Chinese SKS bayonet lugs were threaded to retain the bayonet and later a non-threaded version which was designed for a cup end rivet similar to a AK folder. You can find the cup end rivets on line or inmporvise a peened pin.

Travelled to Tennessee yesterday to pick up SKS's. About a 5 Hr. drive down. We had ordered 4 of them then at the last minute another friend asked for one, luckily he had an extra at the shop. All the guns look the same as the first that was purchased with a couple of them having small blemish's on the stocks and all heavily cosmolined. Each box contains a cleaning bottle, cleaning kit, stripper clip chest bandoleer, sling, and an owners manual. None of them came with the spike bayo's, But luckily the ones I ordered were delivered at the house while on the road and look like new ones, Thanks again res45 for the info.
On the way back home we decided to stop at a mail order business that we had seen an add for in Shotgun News. We called the owner to ask if it would be ok to stop in being that he only sales over the Net. or at shows. Mr. Arnold told us to come on by. Ken has a huge supply of Tapco stocks and mags for the SKS and other rifles. He also has a great selection of color schemes that you don't normally see anywhere else. I picked up a 20 round OD green Tapco SKS mag, some stripper clips, and also some SKS colored front sight post. I've heard some good things about these mag's, I'll report back with a function report. Ken was very pleasant to speak with and I will certainly do more business with him. Check his store out @ www.Kenarnoldcsa.com (http://www.Kenarnoldcsa.com) Well, time for some coffee and then a day of de-cosmolining.:sidegrin_

I reeely like the tech sights on mine..even with the 16" barrel,it's pretty accurate
I plan to ship the trigger group off to Kivaari in the next coupla months to have him do his magic.
found an extra gas tube and drilled some extra holes...it deposits my cast reloads right next to the shooting bench, and fully cycles :small_gri
tryin to decide if I reeely want a full size 20" Rooskie or Yugo...non chromed bbl isn't a big issue

It was a good trip, The last 40 miles sucked, Hit an ice storm towards home. I'll call this the river report instead of the range report because it was to late to drive to the range after cleaning her up, so I had to head to the Great Ohio river bottoms close to home for a test fire.:D
After the de-cosomo I took my mouse sander and Lightly sanded the inside of the stock where the magazine is inserted. From what I had read about the Tapco 20 round mags they are a little fat for the original wooden stock, and it was, but not much. Re assembled and inserted mag and was instantly impressed with the way the mag locked in place and held the bolt back. I stepped outside and hand cycled 5 rounds to see if it would feed, Did fine.:sidegrin_
I have an area about 8 miles from home where I test fire occasionally, it is a river road that has a small bridge with large banks off of the river that make for an excellent back stop. I loaded 20 rounds, inserted mag, and fired one shot, Inspected then rapid fired the rest. The mag performed flawlessly and the bolt locked to the rear after the last shot. After returning home I field stripped and cleaned the rifle and inspected the mag for any signs of wear and found none. I certainly will buy more, They are good to go!:smile_sma

You lucky dog, you got a gold-mine, one of those guns is worth more than a WASR! If there is any way you could put up some pictures, that would be great!
But if youre like me and dont know how, dont worry about it!
Thanks, keep us updated! :small_gri

I use to post pic's using Imagecave to convert them. Then they changed their sight and haven't been able to since. I've tried Photobucket but with dial up, I live in the sticks, It just takes to long. I am going to get Hughes Net. satellite high speed when tax time rolls around, they have the only service available out here. $400.00 for equipment and $60.00 per month there after. If anyone knows another way to post pic's let me know!
