View Thread: Russian 1895 Nagant Revolver

Decided to move this out of the Makarov thread.
I had problems with the Nagant as far as accuracy was concerned, but today I blew through a box of (expensive but crappy) Hotshot wadcutters.
It took a while, but I am starting to get the hang of this gun. I'm not a revolver person, owning semiautos except the Bond derringer. It certainly is an antique design, and not near as accurate as the Mak Russian 9mm, but interesting on it's own. It's hard to get used to cocking the hammer for every shot, and doesn't have much of a kick, but the bottom line is lack of quality ammunition. It is possible to get acceptable accuracy with enough practice, but I'd rather practice with FMJ, or at least jacketed hollowpoint than these wadcutters. And at $26.00+ a 50 round box plus shipping, it costs more than 7.62 X either 39 or 54r. I could shoot tracer rounds of either of those for less than this crap. If anybody stumbles into any Russian ammo of this caliber (7.62 X 38r Nagant) please PM me. 250 - 500 rounds would be an extremely useful purchase.

The russian ammo would probably be more expensive, then the HOTSHOT.

they do make a 32 cal conversion cylinder for them, offhand I don't know who has them,

J & G Sales carries them, but I don't want to convert, I'd like to keep it original, just find better ammo.

The .32 cal. cylinder go for $65. avg and 99% do not work unless adjusted by a smith! You can find the original ammo for $20. a box of 50 at i think J&G!
In general the acc. is oustanding in these guns, but i would not rec. for self defense, it is a .32 and quite anemic!
The best thing to do is to pracitice with .32 S&W long ammo, it works fine and will not damage the gun at all, it goes for about $16. a box of 50.
Acc. never in general is a prob. unless barrel is bad, the problem always was lack of power!

I've decided to go the 32-20 route when I get my Nagant.I was going to buy one next month(and one for my son)..I'll pick up 500 pc of Starline 32-20 brass and a Lee or Lyman .312 mold.

No cylinder changes and I'll split the cost of the brass, mold, etc with my son..I'll load each of us 250 rds...which should last forever.the round is so low pressure the cases should never wear out.Powder charge is approx 3 grains,so over 2000 rounds from 1 lb.

I've also saved a SGN article which shows how to thin the mainspring to reduce the trigger pull, which should make the shooting more enjoyable.Power factor of the round is less than 100...it's a 80 to 90 gr boolit goin 800 FPS or so.

plan put on hold as I've committed to purchase a Rooski SKS., but I'll be doin the Nagant thing after the first of the year.
