View Thread: Mosin Nagant Sniper Rifle w/PU Scope

I finally got my M/N 91/30 rifle back from J & G Sales' gunsmith, Kristopher. I was impressed. I purchased the rifle a year ago from J & G, the scope from IOinc (an exact replica, not an original) and a bent bolt from someone else over the internet. He charged me $120.00 for the basic mount, then zeroed it and took it to a range to test-fire/zero it, so with ammo, range fee, time etc... it was a fairly hefty $176.00 including shipping. Since I'm certainly not the caliber of the fellow in the video on the other thread, it was worth it for me.
It was extremely windy, and the range owner suggested I stay at 50 yards (so as not to disappoint me, he is hard up for money w/the recession), but fortunately it was a headwind, coming straight into my face. At 50 yards with the 7.62X54r, it wasn't an issue. (Unlike the fellow beside me attempting to zero a new EOTech w/an AR15.)
Before, I was using 230 gr Sellier Bellot softpoint ammo and the damn thing was dislocating my shoulder. But I shot 40 rounds of 7N1 sniper @ 145 gr, and 5 145 gr (?)Bulgarian for comparison. The gunsmith said he shot 2 MOA @ 100 yards with Czech silver tip, and my worst was 4 MOA @ 50 yards. For the most part, the bullets went exactly where I aimed them. I was using the "bad guy" police target, aiming for the head and every one was a kill. I did some of my best groupings ever with this combination. The only problem I had was the metal butt on the stock slipping on the heavy coat I was wearing, although I did start to "ouch" at 45 rounds. Several groupings at 2 MOA. I was very impressed with this combination and am extremely happy with the results.
The view was crisp and clean. It sighted well at 100 yards but I didn't want to shoot someone else's target, so that'll be for another, hopefully less windy day.

nice collection

I really like my 91/30 with the 2-7x pn the Darrel's scope mount setup.3X isn't enuff magnification over 50 yd for my aging eyes.I'm gettin ready to cast some 316 diameter 185 gr lead boolits .then we'll see what accuracy she is capable of :small_gri :small_gri

Q: does your repro scope act like the the real one? in other words, when you move the windage or elevation knob does the entire reticle moves in the field of view

Don't actually know yet. I paid for the scope mounting and zeroing done by a competent gunsmith, and the one time I shot it, it was consistantly on target at 50 yards in extremely high winds. We couldn't get the shot-up targets at 100 and 200 yards to stay up long enough to shoot them...

About the mos-butt recoil pad that southern boy has pictured. I orderd one a couple of weeks ago and put it on an Izzy M-38. I really like it. The only trouble I had with the installation was that there was a small gap at the top of the butt pad where it did'nt seat perfectly against the stock. I fixed this by applying a beed of black silicone between the wood and rubber, looks good!:wink_smal

I can shed some light on that. Ive rebuilt 2 original PU scopes including the one I currently have on my yugo 91/30 sniper that has "blood pitting" on it. I mean it looked like someone exploded on it and it sat. Internals were fogged and rusty. But hey 80$ on ebay for an original scope and mount with all the screws and posts. The lenses and all internal parts of the ukranian repro scopes are identical to the originals. I had to replace the reticle and one internal lense assembly with the parts from a new production scope. And it works flawlessly.

nice to know one of our members can repair those old scopes if need be.

I went the Darrel's scout mount route on my 91/30,cause 3.5x isn't enuff magnification for these old eyes.

But if someone waves a sniper at me for a reasonable fee during these hard economic times,I probably wouldn't be able to resist :small_gri :small_gri
