View Thread: SKS and ammo

AK-Rulz
I've read where some say HP & SP doesnt "feed" well into some AK's, but how do those types feed in the SKS?

I have never had any type of problem with any type of ammo either in my aks or skss, as far as aks go it does seem the problems mainly are on the ones with the US made receivers, which is now just about all unless its a preban, which all of mine are except for one!
It is the same with military pistols that were made, they are not in general designed to use anything but round-ball, some work with certain h-points others dont mainly depends on the h-point design, all h-points are shorter than regular ammo which could and can cause some problems getting up the feed ramp!
When they first keltec p-32s came out in 99, it seems they shot all ammo, mine did, but a couple of yrs ago keltec due to complaints started selling spacers to put in the mags if you use a h-point and they say never use corbon hps.
Try different types of ammo to see which brand works best and stick with it,
Wolf has always been questionable at best! Last night i ran across a bunch of posts stating that wolf made after 05 is very problematic due to cost cutting factors, i will never shoot any in my ars after the problems with that ammo in the last few yrs.
Just like 99% of all US made mags for the sks, dont work reliable at all!

AK-Rulz
It was Wolf SP that I was hinting about. I wouldnt shoot any Wolf in any of my weapons, with the exception of AK and if I buy a SKS. I was pretty much asking how SP shoots in SKS. ;-)

Thanks for info

Wolf sp in my opinion is pure junk, it gives the word soft point a new meaning, i am suprised as to how easy the point on it chips and breaks off just loading and or unloading a mag, have to treat it gentle. I never had a problem with it at least not out of 100 round in my skss.
I hope you know if you do buy an sks, keep the 10 rounder in it, since 99.9% US made junk mags dont work and if you can get 1 to fit you usually have to file after bending and or grinding them they still are problematic.
But some people swear by the Tapco plastic 20 rounders!
The S&B ammo is my fav. hot shot and barnaul are also great!

I bought a '53 Russian SKS with a 20 round, and pestered the guy until he dug up the original. I bought a second 20 round one, then gave both of them away and put the original back on. The damn things jam, fall off, won't go on - they are far more trouble than they were worth. I don't like stripper clips, they're a pain in the ass, but nothing is more embarrassing then stepping up to the firing line and having your mag fall off when you pull the bolt back...

By the way, today at the range, I also fired this gun. Of course, it functioned perfectly and accurately, so I won't waste bandwidth just to say as much.

Brown Bear SP seems to work well in my Norinco. Mushrooms good, too. Or so the trees we shoot indicate :D

:uhoh_smal but nothing is more embarrassing then stepping up to the firing line and having your mag fall off when you pull the bolt back... --------------------

:laugh_sma I wish i could see a video clip of that! :D
The only reason, a mag and floorplate fall off from an sks, when pulling the charg. handle is improper re-assembly and nothing else! When you take it apart, you have to hit the small latch which is held in place by the trigger guard unit,
fairly hard tap with pointed object, punch or small screwdriver!
Upon re-assembly usually taking the your palm and giving a good whack, causes
the latch to catch in place, but not 100%.
So even if all looks fine, when chargin handle is pulled, all falls out!
To solve this, after the whack with palm is to take a punch or small driver, put it as close as possible to the outside of tr. guard right below the latch and whack the punch with a hammer, thus causing latch to lock 100% ! :tongue_sm

I never liked the duckbill mags I had one for my sks and ended up junking it it never fed right I stick with the 10rd and stripper clips I got good at loading them I'd like to get one of the fixed 20rd units for mine and see how they work

The chin. also made 20 round steel mags as well as 75 round drums, most all of those need some trimming and filing, however some folks swear by the tapco plastic rounders, to work fine! I have no exp. with them! I always wanted a 20 star marked by norinco and even some of those dont work, plus those are rare
and go for $80. avg. on GB. which is to much coin for something that might not work. I saw a 75 drum for sks at show for $140. and almost got it, but might also need some fitting, and so i did not!

ambivolent
yea I herd about those sks drums seems they are rare if you find the heavy duty ones under 300 most people say get em but I haven't stayed up on em Iveread of an am mag conversion but it seems Noone makes the kit anymore

vz58kid
Some were made in US, but some in china and the only one i ever saw was at that show, it was chin. new in bag and i actually went back next day and it was gone!
You know the bulg. are now making copies of the chin. 75 drums? They go for $159.99!

ambivolent
yea I want to get atleast one I got atleas of every mag except 40rd and a 75rnd drum

vz58kid
Well the chin. are great, i have a 75 and 100 round drum, never shot the 100 drum, but only the 75. they are nice in a defensive pos. but heavy!
Real chin.75 ones go for $250. at all distr.
These bulgarian ones are made on old chin. tooling, they look the same except
they have a 10 stamp (bulg.) i have heard the price on those clones might drop, but i doubt it! I have put up a few posts wanting to know how they work, but no resp. lately bulg. has been having quality prob. with a lot of mags and guns!
So they will never be in the same league as the chin.

ambivolent
da I cant afford an original Chinese at this point I'll settle for a romy drum just gotta sell my hunting bow first

vz58kid
The romys go for $120. but you pull a lever and load 1 round at at time and pull lever, load, pull lever etc. 75x, those cant stay loaded but 3 days, or spring damage!
The chin. open in back and you just dump the ammo in, and they can be wound very simply as well as un wound and can stay wound, no spring damage!
I have seen 3 -75. chin. sellingin boards for $150.- 170. a piece!
Just have to look!

ambivolent
Yea every chin. Drum I've seen has been 200+

ohh and to stay on topic my uncle hunts with his sks and hasn't had any problems feeding SP and I've fed my sks HP with no problems

vz58kid
Most all types of ammo work fine in those, some aks do have problems with sps and hps, mainly due to fact the rec. are US made, and wolf sp is very soft and hps shorter, i never have problems in either aks or sks!
But all my aks have orig. rec.

fullautotogo
my romy sks with ak mag conversion will eat anything, the kids love to shoot it.

I'd really like to try out the Tapco 20 rounders. I've read that to use them in the original wood stock that you may have to widen the stock a bit so that it will accept the mag. I did install a Tapco Fusion stock on my step brothers SKS and it is the best quality I've seen yet.

Firefly
I got some Tapco 20 rounders and they do work great.I've tried them in one of my norinco's and they fit right in.They are also reliable,I fired about 60rds thru each of them with no problems, plus the 20rd mag looks good on an SKS.I still perfer the original 10 rd mags because I love stripper clips.I keep the tapcos for backups.I also bought several Promag 30 rd mags but they were extremely hard to load ,and I would have several jams for every 30rds fired

Firefly
I've never had a problem with any kind of ammo for my SKS's.I've fired Brown Bear FMJ,SP, Wolf FMJ ,HP,Barnaul HP,and Norinco FMJ.

and i'd stick with the factory 10rd... reliable as hell. Never had a malfunction. ever.

Tapco did a decent job with their 20 rounders. You have to get a little sand paper out and smooth/plane down the magazine well so it doesn't get pinched at the top and cause trouble. I wouldn't look to the duckbills to be perfect and the change out of mags can be a little clumsy at first (get the magazine catch extension if you can), but I like the way it looks, and does the job. If you want to put on the 20 rounder and leave it, you can modify the Tapcos to use stripper clips. (I tried it, and I didn't find it as smooth as the original 10 rounder with strippers, so Bob's yer Uncle!)

My steel 20 round SKS mag works great. No feeding or fit issues at all. It appears to have been made from a not rear-rib AK mag. Manufacturer? No idea.
