View Thread: The Best in quality Saiga 7.62X39 mags?

I recently ordered a Saiga Russian American Armory, AK variant; What's your opinions on the best in quality and fit; of the available Saiga mags out there. I know of SurFire and ProMag; are there any other companies that make them?
Who makes the best?

I haven't seen ProMag for Saiga's. The Surefire's I've seen have been AK mags modified to function in the Saiga. These are the only drop in Saiga magazines I've seen in any number in the US. At one time somebody did import Russian-made hi cap Saiga magazines but they are rare and expensive. ProMag may now make Saiga magazines I just haven't seen them. The Surefire magazines seem to work fine without problems.

The current Surefire magazines are US made polymer mags., are high quality and unlike the factory mags they lock the bolt back after the last shot. Try

I haven't seen or tried the ProMag ones.

Thanks guys for your input.
Mississippi Auto Arms, Inc. had the Surefire 30 rnd. mags. I bought a few; I've got to say, these mags fit nice and tight and they are SOLID!
A rep. at Russian American Armory reccommended the Surefire mags.
Really nice stuff! :wink_smal

Why not just legally convert it to take regular AK mags?
The military surplus AK mags are cheap, readily available and the cost savings in mags will more than pay for the cost to convert.

I've taken the plunge and purchased a Sporter model and will do the conversion (move trigger group, pistol grip, etc.). Have looked at a couple of tutorials and they include the adding of a bullet guide as part of the conversion work. If you buy mags specifically designed for a Saiga do you still need the bullet guide? Thanks...Buzz

No, Saiga specific mags have a lip that takes the place of a bullet guide. I have just finished the first part of a conversion(PG and US parts), and I'm waiting on a kit to D&T the trunnion for a guide. The conversion is very easy. I used hand tools, a dremel, and a cordless drill. It takes about 3 hours the first time, I could do it faster now that I know....

Thanks for the info Cheggie. I'm waffling on whether to do the bullet guide or the Surefire's. Any general opinion on how snuggly the mags that people have dremeled on work in Saiga's?

My Surefires work fine, kinda pricey but I figured I'd better get 'em while I can...

Go to saiga-12.com or got to Dinzag's site Dinzag (http://www.dinzagarms.com/saiga_762x39/x39rtk.html) and drill out the rivit in the current bullet guide and remove it. You will need to figure out which front trunion you have (curved or straight). Replace that bullet guide with one of Dinzag's and you should be able to use regular soviet bloc mags. From there you can push back the front site bock and thread the barrel. The possibilities are endless.
