View Thread: link for making, 922, and other legal rules for making your own

I'm trying to get copies of various laws that relate to making your own. I'm supposed to be giving a talk on it soon and wanted to have the rules printed out. I thought I remember seeing them here, but can't find it now.

Specifically: section that allows an individual to make a gun
922R regulations
other areas of law involving making your own.

if anyone has a good link for these I'd appreciate it.

thanks

Well, first there is no law "allowing" you to make your own. There is simply no law that prohibits you from making one. Most of the gun regs and laws regarding making them only apply to licensed manufacturers, not private citizens. Obviously the NFA laws apply to everybody so you can't make Machine Guns, but any firearm that would be legal to own can be made by an individual. Other NFA items can still be made but require paperwork and prior approval from ATF. A "normal" firearm requires no paperwork, prior approval, or even a serial #.

Most of the info regarding homebuilds has actually come from ATF Tech Branch letters spelling out the specifics in regards to parts counts, proper conversion of FA rifles to semi configuration, etc. Gunco has several in their library, as does Weaponeer. Bardwell's site is a great reference source as well.

Also, the laws have changed over time and you must be aware of the date on any ATF letters. One written during the defunct AW ban might no longer reflect the current situation today in regards to configurations allowed, mag capacity, etc. State and local laws also apply, building a semi AK wouldn't raise an eyebrow in rural Indiana but would result in a full SWAT raid of your garage if you tried it in DC.

Here's some links to get you started:

www.gunco.net (http://www.gunco.net/)

www.weaponeer.net (http://www.weaponeer.net)

And the relevant regs per ATF:

18 U.S.C. 922(o) and (r),
26 U.S.C. 5822,
27 CFR 478.39, 479.62 and 479.105

yes, yes I remember now. It dosen't say we can, just dosen't say we can't. That makes it even better.

The links are exactly what I was looking for, thanks.
