View Thread: Thinking about scoping an M39

I know that this is taboo in some circles but I think they look cool scopes. I'm thinking about a late 60's, early 70's model. There are some cool receiver mounts and the side mount scopes that I.O. put out a few years ago rock!!
Has anyone done this, have any advice or pictures?

I'll pull the info together tonight, but there was a company that sold pinned weaver conversion kits. They worked brilliantly. You pulled the rear elevated sights from the Mosin and pinned in a weaver adaptor. Worked great, you ended up with a scope and no permenant changes to the firearm.

ive heard of those mounts and would love to see the info on them
thanks Jim :)

Here's something to think about. The rear mount is slid onto a dovetailed mount and pinned. If you drift out the pin, and drive the mount forward (gently!) with a light hammer and a punch, you'll find a nice dovetail mount ready for a scope. Here's the problem: The dovetail is only 1/2" wide - too narrow for most scope rings sold at most sporting goods stores. Also the taper of the receiver and barrel means that with a wide-mouth scout scope you're oing to have to get rings that elevate the bottom of the scope a good inch above the receiver. If you come up with a set of rings for this, please let me know. I'm still looking.

Morning Guys. I was able to find the info on the scope system. Here's a photo of what they do.
The contact is m39scout@bellsouth.net. Darrell Harrison P.O. box 727 Bay Minette, AL 36507. If you get on milsurpshooter.net there is more info. I don't remember the exact price but they are pretty affordable.

I just noticed AKJim's post. I followed the link, and I see that it's another mount that replaces the sight ladder using the pre-existing rear sight base.
I'm wondering why no one is selling rings that mount directly onto the dovetail. All you'd have to do is tap out the drift pin, tap the sight base off the dovetail, then attach the scope rings to the dovetail. Why is no one trying this? It seems like the obvious solution.

A lot of folks do not want the limitation of the LER scope that mount must have.

I have a pre 1898 Chilean Mauser in 7 mm that I made a scout scope mount for by removing the rear sight. I mounted a pistol scope on it and it works ok. For a Mosin, though, I would want a side mounted scope and keep the sights intact. If I get the mosin from the junk shop cheap enough, I might do something like this.

I have that same scope rail on mine. I have seen two different versions of that rail. One of them has small perpendicular locking screws to hold the rail leveling screws in place.
My scope is coming today from UPS. I had to order a long eye relief pistol scope.
I'll post a picture of it in this forum once I get it mounted.

I've had that setup on my 91/30 for about 6 mos..works fine.Even the anal guys don't mind em cause there's no permanent mods to the rifle.
darrel builds these in batches for each model of rifle.the wait can be 6-9 mos until he coes back around to that model. If he has the one in stock that you want,I suggest buying it otherwise you risk a wait.

Here is my Mosin with the scope mounted. Just mounted it today when I got home from work.

Bah! I've been trying to bore sight this scope, but the scope's internal adjustment won't go far enough to the left.
Looks like I'm going to need something like this: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=542758
What a PITA

Looks good! I put the same set up on a friends M-44 poly stock set up, it is a good solid mount.

I sighted it in on Tuesday evening. It's pretty accurate. I shot three shots through virtually the same hole at 50 yards, but then #4 and #5 were off.
I had to use loctite and some JB Weld to get it to not loosen up from the recoil. I painted the JB Weld black so that it looks a little less ghetto :)
Taking it out to the desert on Saturday...
