View Thread: Beretta Bobcat .22 Ammo

Cool design. Wife bought me one to replace my .22 NAA Mini(s).
I need input on good .22LR ammo. Round nose or Hollow point? Yellow Jackets 'used' to be all the rage years ago but I need new info on ammo.
And how's the .22 Beretta as a reliable personal defense weapon? For the price it looked good but in Md. only USED .22 small frame firearms are available. Otherwise I'd have suggested a Walther.

Reliability and accuracy are the two most important things when using a .22 for defense. A .22 through the eye socket will stop pretty much anybody, but a .44 has a much larger "margin of error" when it comes to "close enough". Rimfire ammo is notorious for duds, so any ammo you buy I would buy several boxes of the same lot # and burn some through it.
Two schools of thought on .22LR used against hairless apes. Go plated roundnose high speed for max penetration through bone and such, or go hyper velocity hollowpoint for max tissue damage even if the penetration is lacking.
Roundnose plated ammo is everywhere, not much difference so go with what has proven to be reliable.
Hyper velocity HP, you have the old standby Stingers from CCI and the newer Aguila Super Max stuff. IIRC, the Aguila wins the velocity wars by a good margin but Stingers can be had almost anywhere.
The QuickShok rounds also look interesting, slightly faster than the Stingers but the bullet breaks into three pieces on impact giving you 3 separate wound channels.
The short tube on the Beretta is a disadvantage for velocity, even the hyper velocity stuff is gonna come out slower than high velocity out of a rifle. Quite a blast too.

The sniper 60 gr from Aguila looks good from the small 22 guns. Low velocity but good penetration by reports Ive seen. Thats what I would use if it worked in the gun OK. The little 22s are like a remote controlled icepick. Eye socket is best IMHO.

Can't say much on what ammo but for accuracy and reliability it is far ahead of
a walther. You should be pretty happy with it. I've carried around a jetfire in
25 for 2 decades and have never had a moment of wanting something else for
a pocket gun. All of my walthers have needed ramp work and still ended
up being finicky with ammo for 100% functioning. m2c / as a note, you are
going to love how handy that tip open barrel is.

Many thanks guys!
Sadly there are no .22 LR projos made like the .22 Magnum jacketed hollowpoints :(
Gonna try the Stingers first as well as some plated RNLs.
Whatever I use must be 100% reliable as the Beretta has no extractor.
But the Beretta is better than the tiny wheelguns I now carry.

Guys,
I tried some Remington HP loads and they seemed OK on 2X4 lumber but rarely opened up The tiny hollow point is filled with a red wax BTW.
I got a box of Stingers and it was like a different gun! GEEZ! Almost TWICE the muzzle energy and TWO 2X4 pines an inch apart were like butter.
I also noticed the case length is MUCH longer on the Stinger but only 4 grains lower in bullet weight. No expansion though so I shot an 18 lb. ham I won at my last Turkey Shoot (Used a SAIGA 12 Hehe) and the Stinger expanded 2 out of two shots. The two Remington HPs didn't expand at all nor did they go more than 5 inches. But then again hairless apes are not Hams.
Gonna stick with the Stingers guys.
Gun is flawless and appears in NRA 'New' condition. The oversize rubber grips will be leaving soon. They're great for grip but if I wanted a bigger gun I'd have gotten a .32 but I aint payin' .32 ammo prices and darn near everything these days is DAO which I detest. And the oversize grips on this Beretta make the barrel release near impossible to push!
But it's 8 shots compared to 5 on my NAA and now I can actually HIT what I'm aiming at!

Yellowjackets never feed well with me, i like the hot CCI stuff meself for autoloaders.
Velocitors really rip :D

Thanks for the post on your experimenting. Loads are always different out of
a short barrel than out of the test barrel.
