My brother got an M44 for his birthday last week, and we went yesterday and bought the.... long version, 91/33? (I'm new to Nagants.) Anyway, these things are F-U-N fun to shoot. Local gun store has 'em for $80, plus the 440-round tins of ammo are only $90.
Woo hoo!

The Mosin is a cool rifle and gives you a good kick when you fire a round!
When shooting the M44 I would suggest deploying the bayonet for better accuracy. The M44s were sighted in at the Russian armories with deployed bayonets and you will probably find a 1-3 inch deviance to the lower left if you shoot with the bayonet folded.
Only $90! I can remember it was only a couple of years ago you could buy 440 round tins of 7.62x54r for $40. But, it still is a bargain compared to the prices of other ammo.
I prefer Soviet, 148 gr., mid-eighties production and Albanian, 148 gr., mid-eighties production. I hear the Soviet 148 gr. mid-1970s is just as good. They have recently had mid-1980s production Bulgarian 148 gr. for sale on Gunbroker.com and some other websites. This is also good stuff.

The M44 is handy with the bayonet removed.

I got a 91/30 and a m44,love them both.

We actually snapped out the bayonet on the M44, to better judge the length of the muzzle flash.
As for recoil, I found it pretty tame. Of course, I'm used to shooting lighter weapons, like my NEF Survivor in .308.... I like the heft of both rifles, and how that tends to tame the recoil.

Uh, and Stupid Question #1: I couldn't find any sort of safety; am I missing something, or they just utilize the ol' "Keep the hammer down on an empty chamber" deal?
my-rifle
To set the safety on the Mosin-Nagant, pull back on the cocking piece knob at the rear of the bolt, and twist it counter-clockwise. Not the most utilitarian safety I've ever seen, and it's downright primitive compared to the Mauser or any U.S. rifle, but it works, and is really fool-proof.

Thanks! I figured that's what the deal was, but I was having too much fun shooting it to take time to figure out that silly safety shit.

Welcome to the evil world of the Mosin... :uhoh_smal :skull: :uhoh_smal :laugh_sma ...now that we have you trapped you'll end up with 12 or 13 of the things in all variations hanging around your house. North Cape publications has an excellent little paper back on the history and different makes.
M44 without the bayo is a great hunting rifle, just practise the silly safety. The 91/30 is a wonder on the range and the muzzle blast is always well appreciated by the guys next to you. You can still get a M38 with and without the recess for the bayo in the forestock from i/o. The M38 was the original carbine length that didn't have a bayo attachment or lug. Then when you've bought laminated stocks, Tula's and Itzvech (sp) you'll find out that there is a whole other world out there waiting to trap you.......
They were called FINN's.................contact exile about his cherry little finn.
They are great great rifles....
Have fun Slade.... and welcome to a new addiction....:D :tongue_sm

That is a very good book,it also breaks down all the parts,I used that book to take my rifles apart for servicing.

If anybody lives in the New Orleans area, let me know. I buy ammo at dealer prices from Century, and you can piggyback your ammo purchase whenever I order from them.
bounce19712
uhhh...century doesn't have dealer pricing on the ammo...does it?

You now have something in common with black powder shooters. COROSIVE AMMO
When I went to the range everyone around winced every time I shoot. I love the blast BABY.
The reason I bought the M44 with the bayonette (now sharpened to a pinn point) was for hunting. If it was good for defending STALIN GRAD it good for hunting.

Yeah, I shoot the corrosive stuff through my '93 Mauser.
That damn M44 is a LOT louder than the '93....

You should apply for a Curio and Relic license.$30 and they will ship right to your door. You will save money if you are ordering online and having to pay transfer fees.It is good for 3 years.Something to think about.td

Next time I get a M44 - it will have the quick deploy folding bayonette. The one I have the PITA - got to hold the sping and hoop out while swing the thingy out type.
The fast deploy is so much easier. Just get it started and it clicks lock on its own - on the barrell.

I bought my Mosin Nagant 91/30 and paid a FFL $35.00 to receive it. Then I went ahead and got my Curio & Relics, (for $30.00) and bought the Nagant 1895 and the Makarov which were delivered to my door, the same as ammo, signature only. Some places that sell ammo want various types of proof you can legally buy it, but throw in a copy of your C & R and no questions asked.
