View Thread: Yugo M92 vs. AK 104

python357
Which is better in terms of absolute quality and reliability. Have heard theat the Yugos suufer from reliability issues and also from rust more than other AKs.

Also, does the AK 104 use the same piston as the full length AK47, or is it a shorter one ? If shorter, then which one ?

I have seen AK104 parts kits with the gas tube as part of the upper hand guard. Is this a must, or can the hand guard be seperate from the gas tube, same as the AK 47 ?

Thanks guys

Which forum is better in terms of absolute answers? Which thread has the greatest reliability? Should I post in Krinkovs, General Rifle Discussion, or AK47's?

:)

Completely depends. How are you defining absolute quality and reliability? Who or where would you be buying the M92 from. Where are you buying an "Ak-104" from?

I doubt you will find any Yugo M92's with rust, they were all brand new rifles when they were cut up. As far as reliability, its an AK, there should be no reliability issues.

AK-104 uses a different piston. Technically. Any AK-104 look alike you buy in the US will use a standard gas piston. Handguard is removable like a standard AK.

What he said......

At the most basic level, you are merely comparing a good 10" barrel underfolder to a good 12.36" barrel sidefolder.

In terms of a best "ALL AROUND" field AK for use with iron sites, I would say the 104 is a better choice over the M92, as you get a stronger stock and a little extra barrel length for a little added velocity, range, accuracy, etc.

But the M92 ain't a bad choice either. I've got my parts kit and NDS receiver ready to go. :cool_smal

I have both weapons and both are outstanding weapons IMO. You won't break either, they are both solid.

The Russian issued "AK-104" rifle uses a REGULAR length gas piston, because the barrel is only shortened down to the gas block.
The gas block is changed with a gas block/sight block combo unit, but the location of the gas port does NOT change.
Therefore, the gas piston remains the same.

Anyhow, what "Tactical" said was right, the choice is between the tiny bit shorter bbl length of the M92, vs. the 12.5 inch bbl of the AK-104.

The reason I Vote AK-104 style rifle, is because with the AK-104, you get the choice of either a skeleton stock or the newer poly stocks, both of which allow the use of an optics rail.
An U/F stock like the M92's would not allow the use of an Optics rail.

Also, the sidefolders are more rugged than the underfolders.

As for kits, the only AK-104 kits im aware of, are the AK-104 barrel assemblies which K-VAR used to sell. I think they sold out, but all you really need is the gas block/FSB combo, the correct cone flashhider, which chris at AK-USA will have to make U if you want the correct one which is a tiny bit shorter than the usual 7,62 FH issued with bulgarian 7,62 krinks.

Besides that, all youd need is a stock assembly and a romy kit, plus small parts.
I'd suggest using a bulgarian stock assembly.

OR< you could buy one of the arsenal SLR-107CR rifles, which might be the smartest thing to do.
You could find one in the $700's. Tally up the cost of a build and see if its worth it to buy the rifle.
Either way you'll have to SBR.

Also, "FAL GRUNT" was right about the M92 kits, most ALL of those kits were brand spanking new.

I think I just typed all that for nothing. I didnt see the date on this.
