View Thread: CZ-82 - Can't get a good group
Operator
Got my first C & R purchase, a CZ-82. Nice little gun. Was easy to tear down and clean. Love the grip, trigger is nice, too. Was anxious to shoot it, so picked up a box of ammo. The only 9x18 makarov in stock was Blazer 95gr. TMJ.
I can’t get a good group for nothing! Standing 10 yards from target, two-hand grip, fire off five shots, slight pause between shots. Not trying to do any fast shooting or anything. I gotta be doing something screwy, cuz everybody always comments how accurate these things are. What am I doing wrong???

what is your normal pistol grouping in the past?
Operator
Bigwheel,
Just finished up mowing grass, set up a target real quick (skeeters are very hungry this evenin' so hadda be fast), grabbed my 1911, loaded and fired 8 rounds. Here's the results. Not my best, but sure better than what I been doing with the CZ. :(

first try different bullet weight loads. The most accurate .40 I ever saw would
shoot great with 155's and do what you got with 180's.

Maybe the sites are set for a left handed person? Try adjustining.

Is there gonna be a test? Cuz you guys sure are making me do my homework on this one... :smile_sma
I am not finding a lot of choices for 9x18 makarov in different bullet weight loads (grain). Typically, they are 94 to 95 grain and FMJ, TMJ, MC or HP. Of course, there is the Glaser Safety Slug or the Cor-Bon Pow'R Ball, but I'm not interested in those at this point. Wolf has a 109 gr. in FMJ, but you have to purchase in bulk, and I'm not ready for that yet. So, think I'll order a box of S & B 95gr. FMJ or Winchester 95gr. FMJ, Fiocchi 95gr. MC, and maybe Brown or Silver Bear 94 gr. FMJ.
As far as adjusting the sights...oh boy! That doesn't appear to be a quick and easy process. But you make a good point. I wanna make sure it's the gun first before I attempt to move the sights....and you notice I said "ATTEMPT". :wink_smal
I did notice that the underside of the beavertail has a sharp spot on it and I'm wondering if I'm moving my grip (to avoid the sharp spot) causing it to shoot to the right??? Didn't get to shoot over the weekend, but will try one night this week. :headbang:
Thanks for the advice so far! Really appreciate it!!! :smile_sma

sight adjustment will only change poi not group sizes. Have some one go with
you and load the gun for you with your back turned. Tell them to hand it to you
racked and ready to fire. Randomly have them hand it to you racked but empty.
When you pull the trigger on an empty chamber you think is full you will see
if you are jerking the gun.

If yo have an Acadamey Sports near you go buy the Monarch brand 9x18 for $9 a box. My cz82 shoots better groups with it than your 1911.
I would suspect the Blazer ammo is to blame.

My 1911 shoots under an inch at 50 yards, never seen a 9 even close.

Speer and Federal bullets for 9x18 Mak are undersized. Use a different brand of ammo.

Top Eleven Bad Habits of Shooters
Not Looking at the Sights. This quite frequently is listed as "looking at the target." A shooter may be focusing his eye on neither the sights nor the target, but since he does not see the target in clear focus he assumes he is looking at the sights. You must concentrate on sight alignment.
Holding Too Long. Any adverse conditions that interrupt a shooter's ability to "hold" will cause him to delay his squeeze, waiting for conditions to better. The disturbing factor about this is that you will do it unconsciously; therefore, you must continuously ask yourself, am I being too particular?
Improper Grip or Position. Suffice to say that you cannot fire a decent score with any gun at any range if you continually change your grip or position.
Jerk or Heel. The application of pressure either with the trigger finger alone or in case of the heel, pushing with the heel of the hand at the same time. Apply pressure to the trigger straight to the rear and wait for the shot to break.
Anticipation. Anticipation can cause muscular reflexes of an instant nature that so closely coincide with recoil that extreme difficulty is experienced in making an accurate call. Anticipation is also the sire to flinching.
Loss of Concentration. If the shooter fails in his determination to apply positive pressure on the trigger while concentrating on the front sight his prior determination needs renewal and he should rest and start over.
Anxiety. You work and work on a shot, meanwhile building up in your mind doubt about the shot being good. Finally you shoot just to get rid of that particular round so you may work on the others.
Vacillation (Plain Laziness). This is a mental fault more than a physical one, which results in your accepting minor imperfections in your performance which you could correct if you worked a little harder. The end result being you hope you get a good shot. Just like you hope you will get a gratis tax refund, and you will get one just about as frequently as you get the other.
Lack of Follow Through. Follow through is the subconscious attempt to keep everything just as it was at the time the shot broke. In other words you are continuing to fire the shot even after it is gone. Follow through is not to be confused with recovery. Merely recovering and holding on the target after the shot is no indication that you are following through.
Lack of Rhythm. Hesitancy on the first shot or any subsequent shot in timed or rapid fire. Develop a good rhythm and then have the fortitude to employ it every case. Frequently many shooters will have fine rhythm until the last shot of a string and then hesitate, doctoring up that last shot.
Match Pressure. If there are 200 competitors in a match, rest assured that there are 200 shooters suffering from match pressure. So what makes you think you are so different? If you are exerting all your mental energy toward executing the correct fundamentals rather than the arithmetic evaluation, your shooting match pressure will be what you feel when people congratulate you on a fine performance.

loosely grip the gun with your trigger finger hand....with the other hand...grip firmly....keep an eye on those sights.. that's how I have to shoot with my cz-52 to hit anything.

Wow! LOTS of great info here! Thanks so much, gentlemen!!! :notworthy
Looks like it might be a combination of ammo and "Operator" error...:rofl_smal....(man, that was corny!)
Stopped at another local gun shop on the way home from work tonight and they didn't have any 9x18 makarov at all. That load is not very popular 'round here. Guess I'm gonna have to order some and have it shipped. Then I can get down to business again and become one with the CZ (so to speak). :smile_sma
Thanks again!

I've only fired Sellier & Bellot through mine and I was quite happy with groups it shot. Not sure about the bullet weight, don't have a box handy at the moment.
Hornady makes JHP's. I think they are 85 or 90 grain. I need to test it with those as that is what I got for carry.
