Hey, nice rifle! I have been an infantry sniper in the 2nd Infantry Division for the past 4 years, and collecting foreign weapons, especially sniper rifles, is one of my hobbies. What kind of groups have you acheived with it? What ammo are you using? Is the PU scope dated the same as the rifle? Do they have the same serial number? What kind of markings are on the scope?

cktad
My 2 cents. Yes Century built some of these repro PU snipers using Finn capture rifles. PU snipers were not made using 1938 dated rifles as they were making the PE/PEM snipers at that time. The PU scope is a commercial scope made by the Russians for hunting and every now and then you can find one on e-bay and Accumounts sells them http://cgi.ebay.com/1-Soviet-Russian-Mosin-91-30-PU-sniper-mount-and-scope_W0QQitemZ270268668271QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item270268668271&_trkparms=72%3A552|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14.[/IMGhttp://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj140/cktad/1inchpugunrh2.jpg]

Old thread but...,
I agree with your assessment of the repro rifle except the following:

Actually the scope on this picture is a 4X20 Chinese scope offered by Accumounts.. The scope pictured above s a Russian PO scope. A better optic for sure. They look similar but not so. I agree on the date and ordinary 91/30 repro buld.
Also the accumounts base in this picture is a cast version whereas the one above looks to be a milled reproduction and is better quality and more in spec. Note how the one here sets the mount back at the seating ball. A sure sign of the out of spec Accumounts casting. They work but not as nice as the Russian repro milled parts.

cktad
I know about the Accumounts mounts/bases being out of spec as I have a couple. You can work on them to get them to fit and look better but the milled steel one from Ukraine are better. The Russian PO hunting scopes are showing up again as I saw one on e-bay a week or so ago.

where can you buy the russian Reproduction parts?

was just about to throw $289 down at accumounts but if their crap ill spend more for decent stuff.

The high quality milled steel reproduction Ukranian PU sniper sets (scope, mount & base) used to be pretty common on Ebay (Hetman500). Not so these days and a lot of the repro stuff is pretty bad and harder to te; the good from the bad. Prices have jumped. A PE setup is cheaper than a PU.

InterOrdnance sells the PU sets but the preice may be $300 or so. Cannot recall what the latest is.

cktad
$299.95 at I.O. and they are the better Ukranian repro scope packages http://ioinc.us/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=IO&Product_Code=SCOP0005&Category_Code=Optics.

Same package direct from Ukraine $300 as sold on e-bay http://cgi.ebay.com/WWII-SOVIET-MOSIN-PU-91-30-SNIPER-RIFLE-SCOPE-Mount_W0QQitemZ310082021688QQihZ021QQcategoryZ10954QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem.

well it isn't original WW2 issue, I can tell you that.......the soviets never put a registered logo on their optics, it's a nice reproduction, not too sure of if the mount is steel or not. just kinda doesn't look like it could be steel, but I could be wrong.

it's steel for sure.

previous owner claimed to have purchased it as is.

the 5513 serial number on the bolt has a different font for the 3 than the serials stamped everywhere else.

I bought it knowing it was a repro...at 265$ shipped...I don't think I overpaid as just a civvie purchase.

I just wondered if this was a production repro from someone like Century or if it was a one of a kind garage build...

Good looking sniper bounce, you surely would have spent more building your own. I'm curious? Looking at the photo it looks like there may be some old mounting holes plugged on the forward receiver like it may have had a PE mount originally, can't make it out. Can you tell if it has?:huh_small

bounce19712
aside from the two tapped mounting screws there is a hole, not tapped, behind the aft screw hole....but no other holes.

whoever did drill and tap the receiver got it a little crooked as I have to screw the top adjusting screw all the way down to zero for 100.

but yes, I'm happy with the price as others are another C note more I see.

I zeroed it the last time at the range and had a good time hitting what I was aiming at on the bench.

My dad and I have M91/30's that we converted to snipers with PE mounts and bent bolts shooting cast bullet's @ .314 dia. The groups we shot after the sniper modifications were impressive, but not what we had expected. But we were shooting off of range bags not from rifle rest. We found a diagram for some homemade rifle rest made from square steel tubing and built a couple. They probably weigh around 60 Lb's. We purchased a couple of nice shot filled leather bags for the front of the rest. When we went to the range the first time shooting our snipers off of the rifle rest we couldn't believe the groups we were shooting. I didn't think we were moving that much when shooting without the rest, but we were apparently moving allot! Are you shooting from a rifle rest bounce? If not give it a try. I realize now what our Mosin's are capable of.... but I also realize I can't shoot for shit!:uhoh_smal :cry_small

the mosin nagant as long as it was well maintained while in service is a very good gun.

it will likely out shoot any one who uses it.
