View Thread: 223 vs 308 Galil
Captain Killgore
Hi, I am new to this site, and this is my first post. I have built many AK's, and am very familiar with them. I have no experience with the Galils. I am interested in buying or building one. I would prefer an ARM version. The questions I have are:
1. Which is more reliable/better? .223 or .308
2. Who offers a new milled receiver for a Galil build?
3. WHo offers original IMI Galil kits/parts?
Thanks in advance for any help or answers.

ORF is the only one making Galil receivers. There is a lot of controversy concerning them though. You might want to read through the treads here concerning them, & also can go to uzitalk.com for more threads on them.
As far as which version is more reliable, both. The Galil is the Rolls Royce of the AK design, & the IMI versions will eat any ammo you put through them with out any problems. I have both a 308 & 223 versions. I have a 308 that has seen better than 3000 rounds through it with out a hiccup.
Personally I would save up my shekels / $$s & go with a IMI version. They can be found on gunbroker, & a fair price for either is $2700 to $3000 depending on what they come with.
Just my 2 cents.

If you want to buy one, I'd buy one. As for building one, even on an IMI receiver, its 2/3 the price of buying a factory one. They are cool guns. I've owned over 20 in my time and been customizing them for 20 years. But there are better guns in .308, and the mags are $100+ which is something to consider.
As my experience increased, I shunned the ARMs for the ARs - the bipod looks cool but defeats the point of a compact folder.
No difference between MR and AA, the SA are less desireable.

Thanks for the advice. I did read somewhere that the .308 versions were more prone to the receiver cracking near the area where the barrel seats? After reading through many posts about the ORF receivers, I guess my "best" option is to just save money and buy an IMI.

there is no"prone to cracking". It is a myth. That a receiver may have cracked sometime somewhere I don't doubt. I've seen cracked FAL receivers, cracked MP5 bolt carriers, cracked M14s and M1 garands. etc . . but there is no pattern that anyone has been able to demonstrate.
