saw a exc. con. chin.sks today has rare orange-red bakelite with slot for fold. bay. in bottem guard. has chinese marked 20 round det. mag. problem is the under-fold. bay. is gone! but the lugs are still on barrel! what lenght bay. do i need and how much are they? i did put one on an ak yrs. ago but i know it was shorter. was listed for $249.99 but i can get it for $200. how much are these going for?thank you very much!

NorincoKid
id buy it.

You'll find the bayo

vz58kid
going to gun show sat. if i find bay. i might buy it. dont know much about skss
but bought a yugo unissued/mint 59/66 yrs. ago, but never shot it! what is avg. value on this one? i dont think i have ever seen one like this with both the early bakelite and the marked and stamped with chin. star bay!
thank you, very much!

NorincoKid
duckbill mag marked china?

vz58kid
yes!

NorincoKid
ive never had a duckbill mag work 100%, some were total crap, some were OK but the fixed original is the way to go.

I can load it with stripper clips faster than changing the akward mag.

But buy it....

Conffffusssed big time?????
What is this sks worth on avg???
i really am AK guy only know that i have not seen one with this type a bake-lite stock or this detach. huge chin. star marked mag. or at least both on same gun, if ever!
thegun is in excellent + con. but when i checked it out, i had just bought a 1937 Tula nagant pistol and i did check the sks out twice but i did not look or remember what yr. is was made. due to the fact i was trying to figure out which nagant to buy at 2 different stores. i did yrs. ago buy a yugo 59/66 sks since it was uniss. and mint but never shot it! but this sks is nice and to me very unusual but have to watch money! with tax + back.-ground check it will run me $228 otd! if i would or could only find out avg. value!!!!

NorincoKid
its really hard to tell someone what something is worth with out seeing it.

Standard barrel or para?
Factory detachable mag or shitty duckbill?
Condition on stock and handgaurd?
Matching numbers?

There are alot of factors.

For 200 and change though, I would buy it.

vz58kid
hi its me again, and of course i need help, went to a gunshow in dalton, ga.
waste of money and time, did buy the sks 15in. bay. for $5.00.
then went back to pawn-shop and bought the sks for $200. with tax and back-
ground check it was $228. got home and the bay, is about 3 1/2in. to long.
wish i could post pic. but dont know how yet! the numbers are all match. the finish is 99.9% the stock is orange-red bakelite, with upper hand-guard texturized, the sling is not a reg. leather tab one but has a coil-sping on each
end first time ever seen one of those!
here are the mark. on left side of rec. R then a triangle with (3?)a 40 or a D instead of the 0. then a S or 5 in 1/2the size of first 2. then 3 chin. characters
that is all thats in triangle.
then the ser. no. 2100406X then SKS 7.62X39 made in China then C KNOX. TN. the bay. cut-out on stock is 3 3/4 in. the length of entire rifle is 40 in. and the barrel if i meas. corr. from right where charg. handle is, is 20 1/2 in.
almost forgot the detach. mag. is chin. and is a 40 rounder, i think it is a duck-bill but dont know for sure!
so is this a para? and what length bay. do i need? spike or blade? i can find a shorter spike bay. at show tom. but is a 100 mile round trip and have to pay $8.00 admission again, so i dont know, unless these shorter ones are super rare
maybe i can find one in Knox. show in 2 weeks? i really dont know anything about the sks do have a 59/66 but never fired it! thank you for any and all responses! SKS NEWBIE! :smile_sma :huh_small :huh_small

NorincoKid
Its not a para.

Ive seen bayo's of various lengths around, you will find it eventually.

Can you get a pic up?

And do the mags look like this:

http://carnival.saysuncle.com/images/sks_duckbill-thumb.jpe

vz58kid
yes, mag looks just like that, but is a 40 rounder and does not have the 2 vert.
lines at bottem but the 3 vert. lines on mine are in middle. unfortunately i dont know how to do pic. yet! I dont know whether it takes a spike or blade bay. put it next to my 59/66 and the bay. on it is also to long! there is also a v-shaped cut on metal end of hand-guard just like on my yugo! i am very happy to have gotten it and feel really stupid having to ask all this, but it was like love at first sight! thanks again!

vz58kid
found pic. of chin. it is either a 64 (blade) or 66(spike) early or late jungle stock,
they look just like mine except the mag! mine has no yr. stamp anywhere?
but i had thought it was an early version. thanks again!

AliYahu
Is it cut for the spike bayonet or the blade? Some chi-com guns are cut for the blade.
As for the magazine, look around for a regular 10-round one. I might have an extra, I'll look.
you did good for $200.

Eli

vz58kid
hello, and thanks again to all! after about 9 hrs. on net since last night, i am sure what i have is the early 1964 jungle stock, which takes the 12 1/4 in. blade bay. hope i can find one at big show in 2 weeks. usually only see spiked ones and seldom those! my rifle looks exactly like the top one in the pic. courtesy of videodon. except my hand guard matches the color of my stock and the hand-guard on mine has texturized fac. finish to keep it from slipping! it is a regular and not para. which i always thought. what mainly convinced me thet it took a bay.blade is the V-cut on metal hand-guard and the 1/4 width of groove. also found out the chin. symbols only mean type 56. the letters in the triangle are 405 the last digit (5) could be an S, but dont think it is a 6. i did find out there was a fact. 406 but not a fac. 405? somebody said that since my top guard was tex. was not the original that came with stock?? also heard and read diff. stories
on detach. mags. besides the hi-cap. AK type they also made detach. duck-bills? and the one with gun the housing etc. is the same as on my chin. AK mags. so i guess i never willknow for sure if it is original! also found out chin. sks are very hard to figure out yr. wish i knew when mine was made! Thanks Again!
PS. found a chart and if its correct my gun was made in 1977!

dstorm1911
Its a pieced together commercial SKS, someone scrapped the original stock and put it in onea the jungle stocks (they are cheap were going for around $12 awhile back Omega still has a ton of em) whoever also lost the original mag and replaced it with a Chicom aftermarket mag (fixed 20 rounder with star looks like a big shark fin was never original equipment) if its detachable then its just a cheapy duckbill mag the chinese solution for detachable was the SKS D and SKS M which used AK mags no other detachable setup was offered for the SKS the barrel should be a pressed in one, value is around $130 to $150 for pressed barrel non matching $200 for pressed barrel in original serial stamped stock stock, Mag and reciever cover (they got swapped for cheap scope mount covers frequently and originals lost), etc.., now an original condition military threaded barrel all matching (including the mag, stock and Bayo as very few Chicom SKS are anything but all matching unless Americans swapped parts, they all left China completelly in like new or new condition with Arsenal stamped all matching serial is stamped on stock and all major metal components) will bring $250 on up, with Viet bringbacks at the last SAR show with papers fetching $350

TIP; Unless ya seriously KNOW a particular milsurp gun types history, value etc.. DON'T BUY from a pawn shop and if your buying based on resale or collector value DON'T BUY FROM ANYWHERE unless ya already know 100% the real value of that gun, ya paid about $100 too much in this case because ya based your purchase on info from an internet forum without #1 providing pictures (anyone here woulda tagged it right off the bat if ya had posted a pic) and #2 with a super poor description based on your lack of knowledge about SKS rifles, if it functions reliably with the aftermarket mag enjoy it as a shooter, it has no collector value and write it off as a lesson learned.. BTW I'd suggest putting it in a Tapco Fusion stock as those Fiberglass stocks are notorious for poor accuracy and swapping it into a Tapco at this point with some Tapco 20 round duckbill mags will actually bring its value up closer to what ya paid for it, ya can also go original wood stock they are available for around $15 they will have the wrong serial stamped in em but better than the fiberglass for a shooter, get an original fixed 10 round mag or tune the 20 to function reliably if its a fixed 20 with star..

i am very happy with what i got, in my area Ga.&Tn. i have never seen an sks
for less than $225. at this point in time. but i am also paying $4. for a gallon of gas, where last yr. it was a little over $2.
i have learned a lot about the sks but have a long way to go!
here is what i learned after spending a hell of a lot of time doing research!
mine is factory 0405 which is unknown on all charts and posts, did find 2 people who also have that code but no info! also it is a a very early model
64-66 was when blade bay. was used! there were 4-5 types of bakelite stocks.
my upper h-guard is matching texturized but no ribs! there were complete rifles with jungle-stocks imported! very few though. the gun is in exc.cond. all nos.
match everywhere, took it apart. the wire springs. on sling replaced the leather tabs.
the gun is all milled with threaded barrel, i also found out that china sports as well as norinco did make detach. 20 round mags the one that works the best is the nor. with the star!
i looked at distr. for a blade bay. and the 20 round star nor. no luck!
there will be a large gun show aug. 9th so hopefully i will find a bay.
thanks gain to everybody!

mdland
Check on Ebay for the bay. dude!

vz58kid
Thanks, i did find a yugo blade, only the blade and put my ch. spring and handle on it and had to cut 2" off the blade. works fine and looks good. Hope to find a box star 20 ound mag, saw one on e-bay for $20. but was sold before i could offer $25. hopefully i find 1 at big show next week! Still cant find no info on my
0405 code!

Kid,
I got the right Chicom blade bayo for your sks? By the way the fibro stocks are a post war replacement. Most blade bayos were replaced with spike blades during refurb. If I understand your markings on your rifle it was late 77 early 78. Enjoy!

OIF III
Kid,
Put the right 10rd mag in the rifle and it will be trouble free.

vz58kid
Well, will be going to a huge show sat. do hope to find a 10 round box mag. and or a 20 round star box mag and maybe an original chin. bade bay. these are very hard to find! the one i got on there that i had to cut 2" is ok but all scratched up. I still cant find any info on my 0405 code, have discovered 1 more pers. has 1 but cant find out any info. either! I know that i have a very nice rifle
dont think it is super valuable but due to code is very rare (unknown)! I mainly want to know if this is the original fiber stock on gun, since the blade was stopped in 66 and mine does have a V cut in ferrule, so i think it is, since those were issued with blade till 66!
Have seen a few pic. of guns with fiber-stocks but the really weird part is, on all i have seen, the cross-bolt is round, on mine is oval, side are flat and even the cut-out on stock for it is also oval.
I also believe but yooperj web leaves me wondering about the 3 on rear sight, the way he list it and pic. of the D mark, one can take the 3 to mean either police issue or commercial??? When i took stock off, had to remove gobs of cosmoline, someone is also selling real. fiberstocks on net for $50. for the blade
bay. only, says they can be converted for spike, which is a lie.
The width of blade cut is 1/4" and for spike is 3/4" and there is not enough
plastic to make such a wide cut poss, i dont need one though!
Did find 10 round box mags for $15. on net most charge $35.
if i dont find 1 at show sat. i will wait till next show in 3 weeks and then order one!
Thank you for all the help!

pflug
I mainly want to know if this is the original fiber stock on gun,

These are replacement parts, the rifle is not how it was originally produced in the 60s

These were refurbished and/or pieced together for export to the US as a commercial rifle

There is no real information on most factory codes, although some with large SKS collections may be looking for certain factory codes it's very rare to find a buyer willing to pay a premium

vz58kid
Why do you say that? These stocks were used on those from 64 on! Yooperj has pictures of some from 64, also my stock has the sling attach. on bottem, as far as i know the repl. ones had them on side! Thanks.

Firefly
Check with www.sarcoinc.com for that original 10 rd mag.The last time I looked they had them for $30 bucks

vz58kid
Thanks, but i found a new russian for $15. most places want $30.+
I am still looking for a norinco 20 round star, saw 3 on an auction last bid was $45. but dont need 3 only 1!

Firefly
I'll tell you what, the Tapco 20 rounders work really well,I keep a few of them around for backups.
