View Thread: Which caliber to carry when you have 2 many

creator0203
I sold my Taurus PT92 and regretted it. It was my second and both never failed me. Well I just got back from sportsmans with a new Beretta 90two and it is freakin awesome. First set of handgun nights sights ive owned. These are the two ive narrowed it down to.
Here is where I need to make a decision. The 1911 I have has great stopping power but low capacity. The 9mm has faster fps and I have black tallons and 17+1 capacity is very nice especially with carrying 1 or 2 spare mags with me.
I almost got one in .40 but I had extra mags and ammo and love the 9mm.
I feel I should only carry one and practice with one caliber. I carry the 1911. It shows carry use and the Beretta is mint. Perhaps I just answered my own question.
Anyone ever had to make a decision on what to carry?
Its the 17+1 capacity that makes me wonder if I should carry it.
Hell, maybe I should carry both :D
Fun times

which one are you the most instinctive with? and which one are you the most
accurate with? 18 rounds in the bushes aren't worth one in the boiler maker?
And last, which is the most comfortable, If it bugs ya you'll get out of the habit
of strapping it on. m2c

If you were a criminal and had to choose to be shot would you like to be shot with 8-45's or 17-9mm"s?If you said 8-45's carry the 9mm:small_gri td

Good points folks. I suppose I have alot more practice with the 92 since this is my 3rd. Perhaps a 15 round extended .45 mag LOL!

Either will get the job done if you hit them in the right spot, with an effective expanding bullet the 9mm is "enough gun" in most circumstances. The extra ammo is a plus, especially in urban areas where multiple assailants is very probable.

Dunno about using black talon though. In the 147gr 9mm load they have not gained a good stopping power rep. Plus you got the bad press the BTs had back in the day, if you ever do shoot someone expect all sorts of accusations of you wanting to inflict terrible ripping wounds and pain. (like "normal bullets" make nice neat pain-free holes....) Most of the 115-124 grain +p hollowpoint loads are supposed to be good. The Ranger SXT line is essentially the updated black talon round without the black bullet coating. "LE only", which is just Winchester marketing. You can buy it at almost any gun show, no laws against it.

Kernel, I've always been told to "just use what LE does, it must be the right
kind". In other words play dumb. I remember hearing of a case of a guy that loaded his
own and the court construed it as wanting to do more harm.

I have been looking at the Ranger SXT's, reviews are good on em. Im going to get soem reloading dies for 9mm. Been saving range brass when I go knowing that I will eventually reload it. Probably buy 150 nice hollowpoints to have loaded in mags since I usually load them to 2 less than capacity, and have extra mags on hand. (The 92 mags are cheap if you buy 5-10 at a time on gunbroker. Got 5 the other day for right at $7 each shipped.) Then a ton of ball plingking rounds for the bang of it.
Thanks folks, keep it going it can only get more interesting.

I face the same dilema, day in and day out,Seth...which one today???? I, too, have a Beretta 92FS which I carry from day to every other,.. loaded with 15 rnds of Ranger SXT's w/2 spare 10 rnd. mags. I also have a S&W Mod.4506 in .45ACP which is also loaded with 8 rnds of SXT Supreme's 230gr. HP's, in 3 Mags. Both are quite a package along with extra mags and all to be carrying every day/night. I do find myself carrying the 9mm Beretta more often than the .45ACP only because it does feel alittle less cumbersome. Been stuffin my own for years, more so now being the price in loaded ammo. I've gotten real good results using RCBS carbide dies w/TC built in to your seater die....in both calibers. No tight roll crimping on these two (taper only) since they HS off of the case mouth, but I'm sure you already knew that.....Dah! lol Anyway,...enjoy your new Beretta 90two, they are nice. T.C. Ken in Pa.

ps. Both are 100% reliable, and accuracy is second to none. Sometimes it is very hard to decide which one for the days events. lol Ken

I'd carry the .45. Shot placement is always critical obviously, but its no coincidence that most police departments have ditched their 9mm's in favor of .40's and .45's. The lower capacities of both the .40's and .45's havent really effected anything as most urban gun fights last just a few seconds with only a few rounds being exchanged. Even fewer rounds actually strike the intended target, so I'd make those rounds count by carrying the bigger gun. Just my humble opinion.

I've spent a lot of time on this subject myself. Have had a G21 for a Looong time and carried it extensively. Thought I had the best or both worlds. Hi Cap .45ACP.

14 in the weapon, and 2x13 spares. But as I got older (read that my gut got bigger) I began to notice that the spare mags weighed as much as the weapon itself and were just as hard to conceal. Eventually I was just carrying the loaded weapon alone.

I finally moved to a single stack 1911 platform with two spare mags. Not as big, not as heavy, easier to conceal and I have 22 rounds ready at all times.

Go with what you shoot best. For me that is 45ACP.

I actually have two Glocks, a 26 and a 30

I feel pretty comfortable with either. Both hold 10 rounds and I have HP's in both.

I've been reading America Fights Back and honestly, many of the stories in there of people warding off attacks are with a "38 caliber handgun" or similar.

Practice with both and be comfortable with both. I seriously doubt if training with multiple handguns EVER hurt anyone in a gunfight.

i have the same problem! for yrs. my glock 27 was my main one and my kel p32
my backup one! then recenly got a kel pf9 and it is now at least in the summer, my main and the p 32 my backup. in the winter i might carry my FN 5.7 but there are no ultra deep concealment holsters avail. that i have seen. my glock is in a galco ultra-deep cover and both kels have a clip!

I'd carry my old PT-92 but it's a bit heavy. Hangs like a brick on my hip. I usually carry it in a shoulder rig with one spare mag on the other side. Still heavy and I don't like wearing a 'Bra'.
I'd carry my wife's 380 Bersa loaded HOT but who wants to carry a PINK gun?
So I carry two .22 NAA Minis, one in pocket (Magnum) and the other on my ankle. Ya forget you have them.
Are they good or great pieces? No way!
But they're better than no gun at all.

creator0203
Ionce apon a time had a Taurus in .25. Has the pocket holster. Felt like you had a wallet in your front pocket. Would pretty much forget it was there. Should of kept it.

tdbrown1969
I have the solution to your problem....you need to carry both 1 on either side so you stay balanced.pt-92 on one side 1911 on the other, should be about the same weight.td

creator0203
Hmmm....They do say a well balanced diet is a good thing :sidegrin_
