I know they're out there,
Who has'em and who has the mags... I know there are better men than me whom already know this, and in detail... I've got a problem, err something of the sort.. I have GOBS more 5.45 now than 7.62 and need 1 or 2 more types that shoot this up. Have a Polish 5.45 kit, but it's for a kiddo to build, so it is embryonic now... But an RPK w/ a hvy barrel would be cool!

I bought a vector from atlantic as it was cheaper than a kit. I was really disappointed in their workmanship. The bolt carrier wouldn't move in the receiver and the magazine wouldn't fit in the mag well. Both stupid, simple problems that showed they didn't even bother to function test it before selling it, let alone test fire it. And this from a Vector I had grown to trust from their outstanding Uzi work - I'd owned and/or sold over a dozen of their full auto uzis with no problems.
But a few minutes on the mill to open up the receiver rails for bolt carrier clearance (common on the NDS receiver for a few inches either side of center support) and opened mag well so the mag would fit (no the receiver but the selector stop plate protruding into mag well). I do not like their thick paint, but it is serviceable. I replaced their black TAPCO pistol grip with a US plum one to match my furniture.
Anyway, it works fine now, I sold off the mag because I don't see the purpose of just one. If I can buy 20 of them at a decent price (which $70 is not, IMO) I will, but as it is, I'll stick with the 30s.
I was very pleased to get plum poly instead of wood. I would buy another (if I had another grand lying around). Atlantic was easy to deal with and kept good communications. The defects in the Vector workmanship were failure to take common, simple, and well known steps on their receiver prep. It diminished my respect for Vector, but was a quick and easy fix on the gun.

Bottom line then(based on your experience),
Buy a Yugp RPK in 7.62 x 39 for 499.99(plus other stuff) and save the 500 large, spend it on more ammo for .30 RPK? That's what it sounds like... Thought Vector was a bit better than that...?

not sure where you got that from "I would buy another".
and 762 to 545 is apples and oranges.
I built a Yugo and bought an original barrel Romy 7.62. The latter cost less, and with a little work on the mag well and redoing an ugly rivet, I like it just fine - I also think the club foot stock and lighter weight make for a better gun. So in 7.62, I'd just buy a romy.
But a 5.45 kit now costs as much as a complete gun, and vector , despite the problems I had and easily fixed, is cheaper than buying the kit and receiver and US parts and building it myself.

Reading into what you said and applying my issues,
No ROI when kits cost as much as the gun complete(or more), no ROI when a 7.62 version is just over half the cost of the 5.45 version, your concern w/ the quality of the weapon produced here(although this could be a fluke, albeit an expensive fluke), and a real ROI in purchasing a 7.62 version and turning savings into 7.62 ammo even at its increasing price. These all contributed to the "bottom line" you saw in last.
I won't have a weapon to shoot all this 5.45 I've amassed, but I'll figure it out. Pardon confusion...
Thnx for input though, was quite dry till you came along.
